Best bit of kit in my bag

After finally persuading my wife that we didn't need a holiday in 2016, I purchased one of these babies - and I'm glad I did, because it's quite simply the best thing I've ever bought.

It weighs a ton (I shoot at cycling events so I'm often schlepping two cameras, one with this attached, all day; my neck usually hurts for a day or two afterwards) but it's worth it - it delivers superb results every single time, and in almost all conditions. It focuses almost unbelievably quickly on my D300s (I've just ordered a D500, and I suspect it'll focus even more ridiculously quickly on that) and the only time it isn't razor sharp is when I've made a mistake.

The only time I've ever had any issues with it was at a race last year when the temperature reached the high 30s Celsius - after being in the hot sun for a few hours, it seemed to take a fraction of a second longer to do stuff and I wonder if, had Nikon painted it white or light grey like Canon do with their lenses, it might have kept a bit cooler.

Otherwise, not a bad word to say about it. If you're shooting sports and don't need a longer lens, go for it.

If I had to pick one overall Nikkor that is, all things considered, the best Nikkor I own, this would be the lens.

Yep, I'd agree with you on that. I've owned a lot of lenses that cost less money and one or two that cost more, but this is the best. I use it for a wide range of photography from sports (including podium presentations indoors and out) to nature, and it never lets me down.

Plus it's so heavy that I always think if anyone was to try to mug me for my cameras, it wouldn't take much effort to beat them unconscious with it. :-)

I couldn't agree more...it's glued to my D750 :)
