So my co shooter is really getting into this. He seems to prefer the D810 and 135mm f/2 for the telephoto experience, - he is really into "far away pictures" wheras I am "stuck" with the D700 and a 50mm 1.4. (When I go out with two or three different cameras I prefer to have wildly different focal lengths).

I know guys I know, many people hate on these threads about people that still use and covet the D700. So here's another one for them. ;-) About 50:50 shot with both cameras.

I love the painterly aura this lens gives from wide open to f/2 - 50mm 1.4D

Look at this rendering at the focal plane from the above shot using the D810 and the 135mm f/2 DC lens. Aperture f/2.5, DC ring f/2.8. This is why I own this lens, painterly is a word I would use to describe it, and so many options with it.

Never too early to start photography.

Not sure why you give the little fella that combo to carry. If he shows a liking for the extra steady larger format cameras and the tele effect, shouldn't you put on a 200-500mm plus battery grip for him?

You might want to make sure he always uses the strap, to prevent dropping the camera. Easy for a kid to do--speaking from experience.

Enjoy. Nothing wrong with the D700.

Same here, I think kids like the telescope effect of a long lens more than anything else!

You wisely removed the EXIF's. No way to pick fights over which camera produced which image, lol. Needless to say, the D700 holds up very well here.

Really nice 3D Pop from the 135DC in the pathway shot above, primeshooter.

Glad you posted this fine set on the FX forum. Pixel peepers on the lens forum would complain about the green and magenta LOCA's of the 135, but to engineer these away with additional corrective elements would probably destroy the rendering character of this beautiful lens.

Some of my most coveted images have been shot with my D700 - I should never have sold it.

Nice images BTW !

D700 produces files that I can use SOOC more than the modern nikon's, granted. What are you shooting with now? I had a quick look on your website, still D800? It's a great camera, will look more at your site later this evening.
The D800 is actually my wife's camera, but I've used it quite a lot - mainly for shooting ballet and opera as you will see on my website. I traded my D700 for a D750 which turned out to be a mistake. The D750 is quite a nice body, but I had tremendous issues with it, which has fortunately been sorted out, but I feel a D810 would've been a better choice for me.

However, we are currently residing in the UAE and try to travel as often as we can, so I started using a Fuji X-T1 and a little Olympus OMD EM10 for lightweight travel, both of which are a lot of fun to shoot with, and lately I shoot mostly with the EM10. If you have a look at my shots of the Grand Mosque here in Abu Dhabi you will see what I managed to get with the EM10 - which my wife keeps calling a "toy camera" :-)

I think a 200-500mm would send him over the edge.

That's the combo I use and it sends me over the edge...

D700 is a fine camera. It only starts to fall apart above iso 3200 when the 810 is still in good shape, but it has great colours. Infact downsized to match the 700s 12mp, the 810 has more detail and less noise which is really good. When using the d700 i prefer to do it in good light though.
