The tonal quality is great - especially the first two. The fact that you had quite a bit of clouds really helped so you didn't have the black sky.

Hi all,

Here's a few IR shots from my Vegas trip.
Great pictures Harry. You just inspired me to go out and take a few IR shots. As soon as I figured out how to post them like you did, I will post mine.

Question - Did you use the 717. What software did you use to process your IR pic's, and what filter did you use?

Thanks,

Mark.

Mark,

Glad you liked them. The IR shots were done with the 717. I used the Hoya R72 IR filter. Normally I use a ND8 filter with the IR but because it was so bright in the desert (the temp was 104) I had to add a ND4 to the stack also.

I now use PS7 but I got good results with PSElements before I upgraded. I convert to B&W using color channels, adjust the contrast, nudge it a bit with curves and then sharpen using Fred Miranda's action.
Be careful if you start shooting IR, its highly addictive.

Hi Harry,

So far, I have everything you mention here except PS. I have PSE. Maybe one day I will put out the big bucks and buy PS 7.0. Your pictures came out really clear after stacking filters, it's good to know that you can stack filters and still have a clear image. 104 degrees, now that's hot.

Even though I don't have a clue what Fred Miranda's action is, I'm assuming I can do most of this using PSE? You stated that you converted the image to B&W by using color channels, would you have the same effect if you use grayscale to convert the image to B&W?

To Late, I'm already addictive.

Thanks,

Mark.

Mark,

I had my best results with PSE using gradient map to convert to B&W. SEt the foreground to balck and the background to white and apply gradient map to your shots. If you do a search in this forum you'll come up with few other techniques. Good luck.

Harry:

I like what you did: I tried a little IR on a backpacking trip last weekend, had some problems. It looked like I was getting a reflection in the filters from the IR emitters, but I had them taped off...so I have no idea what else to do. Are the two holes closest to the top of the lens the emitters? Thanks...

Brad

brad ,

Yes, the two holes on top are the emitters. I usually cut up a floppy disk to make a circle to cover my emitters. On this trip I forgot to take it and shot w/o covering the emitters. On the shots where I got the reflections from the emitters I cloned them out in PS7. It was easy in these shots since I had such a clear horizon.

Steve,

Glad you liked them. I got that effect by making a duplicate layer. I set the duplicate layer to multiply, applied Gaussian Blur to the duplicate layer, faded it till I get a result I liked and then played with the opacity of the layer, flattened the layers and got the results folks seem to like so much.

Hey Phil,

I really lucked out on these shots. It was just the day after Nevada had a heavy rain (very rare in those spots). The sky was a beautiful blue (a novelty for a NYC resident like myself) with these phenominal clouds.

Eric,

Thanks for the response. It was a real thrill to be able to get out into the desert and take some shots. I almost never get that kind of view or sky living in NYC.

Harry,

These are really fine examples or IR. By any chance were these taken at the Valley of Fire near Vegas? I was there in May and the views were spectacular - it's about 40 miles or so out of Vegas. I haven't actually taken IR yet (wish I did in Vegas though after seeing yours) but I plan to this weekend when I travel to New Orleans. I'm planning to take some in the cemetaries and the Garden District.
Thanks for posting these and for the inspiration!.

Kevin,

Glad you enjoyed the shots. Most of them were taken at Red Rock Canyon about 40 minutes west of Vegas, the last shot was taken at Hoover Dam. It was kind of frustrating being "stuck" at the Mandalay Bay Resort for most of the 10 days for my convention when I wanted to go out into the desert and take some pics.
