Is the Pentax KP the best camera Pentax has ever made?

P Sv TV Av TAv B (Bulb?) Take a pick, all available all with different results, all very creative and great pictures.
Has the KP no M mode?

Yes, it does have an M mode, Auto ("green") mode and five user modes, in addition to those listed above:

Loving aperture rings, focus throw and distance scales.

I am the proud owner of a Pentax KP with a 55mm to 300mm DA lens. The camera 'knows' this lens and has produced wonderful pictures even when light contrasts are extreme . I also paint on canvas and use a 50mm smc f1.8 DA on a tripod and a photographic lamp in the main light socket. Again, the results are superb. What results have other KP owners had with their lenses and what pictures have they been used for?
I think the KP will become one of those "Pentax Landmark cameras".

With excellent IQ, with a stunning new generation sensor, 5-axis SR and all the other SR applications, compact and matching the DA limiteds, great AF, quiet shutter, tons of dials... what's not to like?

Of course there are cameras that a geared for speed and video, like the D500 and 1DXii, which are also excellent but quite different in their "philosophy".

As far as I can judge from the specs and reviews the KP offers small benefits over my K-S2 but with the same great form factor. Best ever would be 35mm MX provided I had a limitless supply of free film and overnight processing of course
I have 2 MX's, got them for nothing, one was really badly corroded as the batteries burst and leaked. I replaced the seals and bought a new focussing screen for one costing £35, the SE one for macro/long telephoto.

Both work perfect, exposure meter spot on, smooth winders and mechanically perfect despite being around 40 years old. I love the DOF functionality on the self timer lever and the mirror lock up trick which is easy to do.

I use both as my main film cameras, develop and print myself. Both produce brilliant photos, especially with the K28, K35 and F*300.

So compact, the way Pentax should be, I hate large gear!

The viewfinder puts a K1 to shame.😎

it does, doesn't it!?

The K1's VF isn't bad (it's bright!) but i wish it had a greater magnification. Of course the MX had much less info on the bottom to display. I think the Olympus OM2 holds the record (until you look through the loupe of a 67, but that's unfair).

Thank you very much for the assessment--and for being a bad influence. :)

Hi Miles, the MX and ME Super remind me of going to the cinema in the late 70's and 80's (only a primary school kid), it's the size of the viewfinder and placing the F*300 on them I could look through it all day like a pair of binoculars. For me less info is more, I don't want anything else in it. The new SE focus screen is just a matt screen with a circle without the split microprism. In my other MX I have 2 verticals at the sides and one on the bottom, again without the split. I can't trace this focus screen anywhere, it isn't in the MX/LX database!

Yes a 67 comparison is unfair.

I've yet to reply to you, I haven't forgotten. 😀

Donald,

Being able to shoot a great picture with a camera does not mean it would meet your expectations. For me, the K7 had its advantages over my previos camera, the K10D but when I looked at the pictures taken in the right conditions I liked the K10 pictures more (and we are talking cameras 2 model apart). That was not right about the K5; I liked every single thing about it, and still love it, and its pictures a lot.

Perhaps like the classic Spotmatic that I still own and use? A hard act to follow. Thought some guys here might appreciate sight of a "Summer Discoveries" brochure featuring that classic in its advert.

Ive not tried KP with video. I understand its not as good as say a canon. But I use the KP as a stills only. HDR is amazing with tripod. The new Sony sensor has fantastic results even with high contrasts.
