Is the Pentax KP the best camera Pentax has ever made?

P Sv TV Av TAv B (Bulb?) Take a pick, all available all with different results, all very creative and great pictures.

I wear glasses and find the KP viewfinder clear through the adjusted diopter. Why use the screen unless at an air show and at full arm length above peoples heads?

Ahh gone are the days looking through 35mm film strips trying to remember the negative inverse for orange.

Haven't got a KP (yet?), but I can say for sure that it has some mighty, mighty big shoes to fill to come close to being the best camera Pentax has ever made. That crown, I think, is the permanent property of the Spotmatic/K1000 series of film cameras.
Whilst we can argue what is the best Slr or Dslr Pentax have ever made and surely contenders for Dslr would be K10d, K7,k5 or K3 all with valid arguments in there favour the non series bound inbetweenies K200,kx,kp even though often Tech marvels will never be contenders.

Pentax for some reason seem to see a need to give with one hand (marvels latest tech) and take with the other (limit buffer weaker build etc) and release at higher RRP with them .. To me the're tech mules.

Doesn't stop them being brilliant cameras but best - Never

Canon and Nikon seem to do this in a more organized way. Lower tier models are progressively more crippled in some specs compared to higher tier. Is it true the bottom tier Nikon models still can not AF fine tune their PDAF?

Signs seem to indicate the new flagship is on the way sometime this year. That should settle this question.

I'll admit I have trouble imagining a much better DSLR than my K-5iis. If Pentax would put the new sensor and some of the other incremental improvements into the K-5 body,I would give it the most serious consideration, and would probably prefer it to the KP simply because it would be a completely known quantity.

Right now the KP's strongest competitor in the contest to become my second Pentax camera body is the best secondhand (or new old stock?) K-5iis I can find.
+1 for the K5II

This is one think I really do not like; crippling to lower price.

A low tier camera shall be an as good camera you can make for a lower price. It shall be designed to be a cheaper tool that do its work well. It shall not miss essential things that force you to buy something more expensive to be satisfied.

Marketing trickery shall not decide how to "cripple" cheaper models. There shall be a good reason for removing things, and all that is needed shall be there.

This is one reason I like Pentax. Even the cheapest cameras are good tools.

I suspect many Pentaxians feel the same way, and this is probably one reason why we're so fascinated by the possible discovery that the lower tier models may have an aperture motor that tends to break a little too soon. I should add that I have no experience of this problem with bodies passing through my hands.

I did find, though, that I got annoyed after a while with bodies without ultrasonic sensor cleaning. It would be great if the industry could decide to make them standard.

This is another advantage of the KP and higher specification models such as the K1, K3 and K5. The ultrasonic cleaning doesn't get mentioned by reviewers but is a definite plus in favour of these models.

I used to have to clean my K10D all the time. The ultrasonic cleaning is so much better.

I have cleaned my K-1 sensor once. It was a big sticky thing. My Butterfly brush, brushed it away. I have had zero problems with my K-3 and K-5.

I was in the same position, with my K5IIs. Now have KP for 3 weeks. You'll be going to like it. Not really a big jump from K5IIs, just a little smaller and better, some extra features, and the flipping screen..Only downside: small battery.
