I am planning a long hike in the mountains this summer, and find my present tripod too heavy to carry around.

Any suggestions on a light and sturdy travel tripod for a6500 with the 24 mm Zeiss f1.8 or the 10-18f4 ?

What is your current tripod? How heavy?

Just so we know what is too heavy. I have a Benro TravelAngel - For the money its superb.

Budget?

I find that up to a certain point what you put on a tripod is irrelevant... its different once you get past say 4kg but up to that it doesnt matter. All you need is a tripod that is sturdy on its own... As a lot are unstable themselves, without factoring added weight.

I also have the a6500 with 10-18 and for hiking I'm using a Vanguard VEO 235AB. 3.3lb, 57in extended height, 15in folded, 13lb max load, it offers an extra low angle photography option (great for flowers and wide angle lenses), ball head, buble level and convertible spike feet.

Depends on you...but. I like the pedco and a monopod.

How about the Sirui T-025X

I've been happy with my Manfrotto befree

Or the lighter CF version. I've traveled all over the world with them. Nice thing is they fold down to less than 12" also.

Thank you all

A lot of good tips - I will have look at your suggestions and review..

I have this...

Bear in mind the weight is with the ball head. Have a look at these. All carbon fibre and the 18/19 tripods are less heavy than mine even. And mind feels light.

After looking at Mefoto, Sirui, and Manfrotto options mentioned here, I recently bought this Dolica one. At half the price of some of the others, it folds down to 12", weighs 2.5 lbs, and can be configured as a monopod if desired by unscrewing one of the legs. If I was willing to carry a tripod while backpacking, I'd have a hard time beating this one; certainly for the price.

I only intend to use this for day trips, though. It fits well in my messenger bag -- even better if I detach the "monopod" leg.

I recently determined/proposed that the weak link in terms of camera vibration on a tripod is where my A6000 connects to the quick release plate, due to small contact area of such a thin camera. Until I get that solved, any more $$ spent on a tripod is wasted, IMO.

This is what I use when backpacking: Pedco UltraPod II when I don't want or need the extra weight of my Manfrotto BeFree. It works great on it's own or strapping it to a branch or object.

The head can be removed from the center column and used directly on the spider. This puts the camera a few inches off the ground. Bag hook on the center column for adding weight to the tripod. I replaced the head with a Sirui C10x.

  • Carbon fiber tripod with adjustable-height legs, rotating leg locks, and rubber feet
  • Built in level, quick release mounting plate; Ball-head design for 360 degree rotation and 90-degree tilt
  • Recommended max load weight is 8 lbs (3.6kg) for optimal performance
  • Weighs 2.4 lbs; extends from 12.5” when folded to 52” when fully extended; Carrying case included
Thank you

Wow, this looks exactly, and I mean EXACTLY like this Dolica -- down to the fit and finish. Any reason not to save nearly $30? I know the Amazon Basics one says it's carbon fiber, but the weight listed is actually the same as the Dolica. These specs are a questionable though, because the Dolica I bought, spec'ed at 12.5" folded is actually 13.5". (I got the one that converts to monopod .)

I bought the Dolica at Costco a few years ago when it was on sale. I can't remember the price, but US $60 seems close. Maybe it was a little cheaper?

The head isn't arca compatible, although it appears to be. The QR plate is wider and the clamp itself isn't able to close down enough to use actual arca QR plates and L-brackets. I bought the Sirui C10 ball head originally to replace this head. I now use it on the AmaonBasic tripod. The size when folded is, as you say, also wrong in that listing and actually is 13.5". I don't really like the monopod, but having it is a plus.

The AmazonBasic Tripod I also bought and it is CF. I paid US $84 for it at the time. The real 12.5" height when folded helps in getting the tripod into smaller bags and is the reason I bought it.

I don't mind the shorter maximum height, as I normally use a tripod as collapsed as possible, legs and center column, anyway. I don't normally try to bring my cameras up to eye height and prefer the extra stability of the more collapsed tripod.

My original small tripod is a 14" when folded, Gitzo GT-1550T. I bought this at a closing Ritz Camera store for a pretty large discount. Even so, the cost was twice as much as the other two tripods, but close to the same after swapping out the head with the Sirui C10 on the other tripods. Original cost on the Gitzo was ridiculous, and I wouldn't have pay it.

I have to agree it is a nicer tripod than the other two, but the head that came with it isn't all that great. The Sirui C10 is nicer simply for the panning feature. Yeap, I paid more money each time to get half an inch shorter tripod when folded. I did this over the coarse of a few years as the products came to market or I found out they were for sale. That half inch has been worth it every time.

Thank you
Russell

imho unchallenged: Slik Sprint Mini II complete with head sbh-100dq.

Small. light-weight, affordable, decent height

I have my doubts about the usefulness of the monopod aspect, but I think being able to detach a leg for more compact packing is a plus.

Good to know 12.5" is the real height, and absolutely agree it can make a difference. Luckily, the bag I'm using will accommodate the extra inch. But, it makes me wonder if they fudged the weight spec, too.

Take a look to velbon ultra TR 463M... after trying many others it's much better for me in size, weight, speed..

Everything. ...
