Hello

Does anyone have any experience or knows about compatibility of using Memory Sticks with the Iomega Clik!, Fotoshow or the Digital Wallet???

I'd like to take that nice zoom of the 505 on a longer voyage but really need some sort of portable storage. Laptop is too expensive and too big

Thanks a lot,

Chris

Even the new VAIO C1 with built in mem stick slot? 1KG, less than an inch thick, half the footprint of a standard laptop, silly little camera built in.

Heres a link.

http://www.sonystyle.com/vaio/notebooks_c1.htm

1.06" X 9.8" X 6.0" - 2.2lbs

600MHZ crusoe processor
12GB hard disk
128MB RAM
Built in memory stick slot (Magicgate support for MP3s)
Built in V90 56K modem
USB
Firewire (iLink port)
PCMCIA type II card slot

I had the older C1XN a year ago and it was nice and very portable. That didn't have the memory card slot or built in modem (my modem took up the PC card slot)

So this new one is much improved - its almost designed for Cybershot owners.

Thanks Richard. It's a very nice machine, no doubt. Checked the prices quickly at yahoo shopping and it's in the order of $2050+

Since I really don't need a notebook otherwise, that's way too much. Just to compare:

Digital Wallet ca. $600 Dollars
FotoShow ca. $300 Dollars

Thanks anyway

Richard,

Although this notebook looks like nice tool for word processing, it isn't what I would want to haul around. For instance the Digital Wallet is:

5.25" x 3.75" x 1.25" - .75 lbs

So the VAIO is three times the size and three times the weight of the Digital Wallet. This is a critical diffierence if you are planning a trip to Europe or even a day hike into the back woods.

Also note that the VAIO's weight is with OUT the AC adapter, cables and various other acoutrements that you might want to take to use it while on your trip.

On the other hand, if you WANT to take a computer on your vacation, then it's probably a good option. Each to his own. :-)

Regards,

Dan.

Unfortunately, none of the portable storage solutions support the memory stick. Since you mention cheap, you could go this route: Get the Sony memory stick to PCMCIA adapter, and the cheapest crummy old laptop with PCMCIA slot that you can find. B&W is OK, you just want to store the pictures. Spray paint the outside of it red with black dots so nobody steals it. Put a bigger 2.5 inch hard drive in the laptop to hold your pictures. Put a minimal install of Win95 on it, or if you are really smart put in DOS with PCMCIA card services. Cost is about $80 for the adapter, $200 for the laptop, $50 for a bigger drive (www.computergeeks.com). You would have to have some computer "hacker" in you to do this. I use an old Toshiba T3400 machine (486/33, color) for this purpose (not memory sticks though), it weighs about 3 lbs, plus I can check my e-mail. When I am going by car, I take a Zip drive also and make another copy of my pictures for safety.

another (maybe the only!) solution. But while already hacking, what about connectiong the palm to the zip drive and the camera ;-) just kidding ...

I find it truly dissappointing from Sony that they don't provide any descent solution to this. I still have the 'old' 505 and I think they should have ample notice to recognise the problem ...

Oh you are in the middle of the SMS (Sony marketing systems) trap. The proper move now as you see that you simply can't buy 100 memory sticks:

Buy a Sony Vaio laptop

They think if you can afford buying a $1000 camera you can (as a decent accessory) also buy a $2000 notebook :) Sony takes care of you, you only have to pay ;) (And yes, the hook is the integrated memory stick port, hehe)
