Has anyone found better lens caps for FZ200/330/1000 ?

Bruce, that Tamron one does look good. Of course with the projecting outer perimeter grips, I don't know whether a 52mm one would go on an FZ200 when it is switched off.

It's kinda funny to me that anyone would have any problem with any kind of lens cap. They all work and are pretty simple.
Tom, I am guessing that you have not experienced the lens caps on the FZ200, FZ330 or FZ1000.

Other people seem to be gaining useful knowledge from this thread.
That said, this is the lens cap that I use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003XJF3UC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It protects the lens and is useful for setting the occasional custom white balance. . . . . . . . . .
:-)

Sure, I used the original lens caps that came with my FZ200 and FZ1000 for a while. You put it on, you take it off. How hard can that be? :-| I just prefer using the type that I linked to, because it has a white balance filter built into it.

It is not just me, several people in this thread find those lens caps, and the FZ330 one, a pain, especially as the inner grips are shaped with a slope that helps them to slip off the fingers.

It is incredible! I did not found HOW it is possible to upload a photo! Please help. Thank you.

Thank you very much! Another question: my image is ca. 160KB. The upload procedure (insert image from your computer) still not accomplished. Already 6 minutes from upload beginning still not yet finished! Something is wrong. But what?

3 drops (or other shape) of decoration plastic fluid on each lip. Now it is possible to take the lens cap off even if lens hood is mounted.

Thanks, simple and effective. "Decoration plastic fluid" - interesting, have never used or heard of that.

Tom K. has got a good lens cap as well. Unlike Tom's cap you can pinch Tamron both with inner lips and outer ridges.

In case you keep lens hood nearly always on as I do (having a good bag then) you can pinch the inner lips comfortably whereas the lens cap with outer pinch only like Tom's might be difficult to put into the lens thread with lens hood attached.

Both outer and inner Tamron grips look better than Panasonic.

One could possibly paint it white and use it for white balance adjustment too - not sure.

If I continue not using the lens hood, Tom K's type might suit me.

Eugene - Decopointer looks good! Sorry for late reply.

I have ordered these lens caps on Ebay UK:

52mm, £1.89 delivered:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321950550964?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

62mm, £1.39 delivered:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231736143152?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

They look broadly similar to the Tamron ones. I can return them if I don't like them.

They seem to be a generic product, being sold by many sellers.

On the FZ330 and FZ1000, the lens cap is very close to the lens barrel and this makes the outer clips a bit less accessible. Therefore the inner clips may be more easily usable, and the inner clips on the Panasonic lens caps are poorly shaped, as discussed above.

Of course, it works best if you save as .RAW ;-)
Ha! Ha! Good one.

Nonetheless, thanks to the originator and replies for this seemingly trivial thread. I've been cursing the bloody lens cap since I got my FZ300 a week ago and the suggestion for pinching the outer grips is a big help. Still would be nice if there was a cap with better inner grips. I tried the one on a friend's Rebel T6 and it was much better.

Mike,

Thanks for initiating this not-at-all boring thread. I've picked up a number of great ideas to solve the annoying slipperiness of the lens cap...
  1. Use the perimiter grips instead of the centre ones. Works better for attaching than detaching but still a great improvement
  2. Who knew that the lens hood was reversible! I know, I know RTFM! Means I can now use my smaller Case Logic case instead of the huge Amazon DSLR one
  3. Love the idea of using a velcro strip to store the lens cap while shooting
  4. Will also try some sort of mod (perhaps with Sugru?) on the inner grips to make them more usable
Great thread on an admittedly "first world" problem as one poster commented but interesting nonetheless.

It was mentioned in another similar thread, that pinching the outer rim is problematical if the camera is kitted out with the lens hood, thus restricting access. But there is still a simple answer, and that is not to attempt the pinch method with two fingers, but to press one finger against an inner grip and just push on it. The lens cap will simply come away.

Hello David, wow, this is an old thread!

After this thread I did a follow-up thread:

where I described the cheap generic lens caps that I had found on Ebay UK.

They solved all these problems for me.

I kept it simple - no strings, no velcro, if the lens cap is off the camera it is in my pocket or left in the cupboard at home. I don't put the lens cap on the camera when the camera is in active use or when it is in its case, but I like to put it on when I am handling the camera to change batteries etc.

Re "when it is in its case", that is because I modified my Hama FZ330 and FZ1000 cases to be "quick draw" and wanted to eliminate lens caps from the equation, see my thread:

I never use a lens hood, so that is not part of my scene.

Thanks for your comments.
