I use this one here. (FastTone). Very very rare Photoshop (to complicated for me)

I totally agree with Mario FastStone is free and it is what I use 99% of the time. Can't go wrong for free:-)

What EV value are you using?

Can you post an example? Paint Shop Pro has a filter: Fill light/clarity that helps any problem that I have with the P610. See the example below of a sunset in Tanzania, Africa. The sunset is ok, but with fill lighting the foreground pops out and you see that there is actually a scene going on here that is much more interesting. (well at least to me :o). Note the purple and yellow flowers that I forgot were there in foreground.

Added fill light/clarity, some vibrancy to the colors, a touch of sharpness and 16:9 format.

Another example: these examples and previous are compressed to save space, so take that into consideration. The original files are much bigger.

Lion in a tree--imagine taking this great pic and this is what you end up with or...see the post below.

Same image with some back light/clarity and high-pass sharpness. I could do more, but just to show how easy and quick, it took me 5 minutes to do this.

Where can this be found?
Yes, you can get other similar programs for free, but not as complex. I rate this as an easier to use photoshop-like app: http://www.paintshoppro.com/en/products/paintshop-pro/standard/

Pretty good price now as well--I'm not pushing them, I just really like their fill light/clarity filter over anything I've found in any other program.

Most of the time I get the best of my P900 pict with faststone .

But I am afraid with the quality of yours samples no processing will give a good result

Only solution shoot with higher shuter speed afap with ISO no more than 400 !

It's difficult to correct out-of-focus or shaky focus images, of course, with any app. Here's a quick fix I did for the two birds with long tails. They are certainly doable. As others have said ISO and exposure go a long way to making a good picture. I don't mean to step on your images--I will delete if you want me to.

I have no magic solution, only a few suggestions:

The ones that turned out to dark are mostly back lite which throws the metering off, a couple of suggestions..try center weighted and if that doesn't help try spot metering. Another possible solution point the camera at something in the frame that is not back lite and half press the shutter button and then re-frame your picture.

It looks like your shutter speeds are way to low for the zoom factor your using and I think your getting some camera shake as well. You might want to try a tripod or other support when shooting in these conditions and it will probably help to cure the problems you are having.

The King Fisher exposure looks pretty good but camera shake is probably the reason it is blurry.

Good Luck and let us know if you get things sorted out and please post some pics.

many thanks mark, threed 123 and others ,this morning i set my iso up from 100 to 200 and took some pics and here are the best ones all taken from my car and hand held it was overcast and a little windy and then a downpour which sent me home .this afternoon i took some pics from my bedroom upstairs of some birds the black bird was hand held and then i used my tripod for the brown one all still with the same settings on the camera as this morning . this evening i saw the dp replys so please tell me what you think and also what settings to try , camera shake is me for sure and im trying to rest against things to avoid it .

For me the best one is the number 1 Note that this is the one with the highest shutter speed even still low at 1/80 s and the lowest focal lenght . Personally for long focal lenght handheld i consider a shutter speed of 1/200s a very maximum and I always try to shoot with faster shutter speed. I known not always possible but this is absolutly necessary with these small sensors as we cannot increase ISO very far.

The other picts does'nt look nice if you look at it at 100% size even if they may be pleasant at reduced size.

What a difference a day makes, these are much better than the last pics you posted by far.

Shutter speeds are still low for the zoom your using and I am not sure why at ISO 100-200 in the lighting conditions shown in these pictures it should have been higher.

Try dialing down the EV value o or -.3 and try taking some pics with a tripod or other support. I think you will see a difference.

Waiting to see your next set of pictures.

thanks mark for your kind words , today with all the chinease firecrackers going off around the lake and my house and the poor dogs barking for hours gave no hope of any bird pics so i must wait till the noise goes away and then i will post some more pics its 2 or 3 days long this noise in thailand so monday looks about the time frame before i can post again . philip

mark i have set the ev at 0.00 and here are some pics i took handheld and the flameback had a coconut branch fluttering sometimes so maybe not too good a shot. what shutter speed would be best do you think? .

Exposure on 1 and 3 look good, not so much for 2 and 4 but that is probably because of the back lighting.

Only my opinion, try P mode and set your ISO to 100-400, there is a setting for that.

What Auto Focus setting are you using?

Your pictures look a little soft, probably due to camera shake.

Getting better every time for sure.

hello mark my iso is set at 200 and my auto focus is af-s single af and im in p mode . rain here today so no pics yet. appreciate all your help with this and after reading much of your written work i decided that i must keep trying and i have just bought another p900 for my wife to use as she helps spot many birds for me and has become very interested in birding . best wishes. philip

This may have been mentioned before & I missed it, but turning digital zoom off will help with clarity. Most of your images exceed max optical of 357mm - see the difference in the two pics above.

You have quite a variety of birdlife and your images are looking good!

Might also give scene mode "Bird Watching" a try. I really like it for the small focal point and quick focusing. It works best on stationary birds.

I've been shooting in burst mode lately and then selecting the best image manually when viewing during PP. There is a drawback to this, as the camera locks up for several seconds after the burst to process images. Still, it's worth it to catch different looks from the subject and ability to select best detail/pose.

Occasionally, during image playback in the camera, choosing "Quick Retouch" adds just the right amount of contrast/sharpness so that little to no PP is required.

I can tell you're enjoying the P900!
