for BIF, GX85 + oly 75-300ii is definitely a possible combination. i thought that the CDAF would not be fast enough but i was pleased to find out that the AFC or AFF is certainly fast enough at least for these Red-tails.

the biggest problem i've found is keeping the bird within the selected AF points and since the EVF has a slight lag (compared to OVF), the bird could have already moved to a different spot and the camera would AF on something else.

I wonder if the G85 with the centrally mounted and better EVF would alleivate this?

making the AF area bigger is great if the background is plain and not distracting, but other than that, AF has a tendency to choose the background.

making the AF point smaller makes it harder to keep the bird within the AF area.

cardinal rule - get as close as possible, but many times, that's just not possible :)

learning all the time...

A pity it isn't closer -- like a quarter the distance away! Talk to that bird! OL.

The fourth shot is a beauty.

Nice work and interesting comments.

Yes, indeed, nice work. Thanks for posting.

But can I ask why you chose to use an AF point (or points) and not the tracking option?

the tracking option is too slow. it is difficult to put the point on the bird and start tracking, at least i have not been able to do that with any success.

thanks. these RT's used to come down to much lower buildings and parking decks, but not in the last 2 years. so it's on the 21st floor behind glass windows.

I used to wait for them to return to their nest which was atop a church in downtown Raleigh, but, they moved 2 years ago and didn't leave any forwarding address. :)

Agreed, my experiences with a 45-175PZ have been less than stellar. Half the time it won't focus at all and I've also experienced random times when the lens will just "stick" in a defocused position.

I'm trying to find a small mirrorless with good autofocus, the GX85 beats the pants off the PEN-F I tried but is not as good as my old Nikon V1. Since I'm not going to sink more money into the V1 I may just have to try out an a6500.

1). I wonder if 4k pre-burst mode would be helpful in this situation.

2). Were you using burst mode for these shots, and if so - high speed (no autofocus between shots) or medium (auto-focus between shots but slower)?

Thanks,

haven't tried 4k burst.

burst setting was medium WITH live view.

biggest issue is keeping the bird on the AF points.

I wanted to try something else today but these birds went AWOL.

those with the G80/G85 - how much better is the EVF?

i wonder if the EVF being in the center vs being offset to the left would make a difference to framing
