i guess not make sense to buy Em5 II at this point

or is it? I can get it at discounted price. Look at E-M1 II

even if EM5 III did come in 2017 expect massive price increase

Actually I think the first EM5.2s were in customers' hands in late Feb 2015, so not even two years yet. But probably this autumn (northern hemisphere!).

Olympus has traditionally released newer bodies on a 3 year cycle with the exception of the new E-M1 Mark ll which IIRC when announced was to to have a 4 year turn cycle. Therefore the earliest we would see a E-M5 Mark lll or another new model number that will be the update to the Mark ll will be in 2018.

The good news is that they will start to offer promotions on the E-M5 Mark ll later this year to move out their inventory. ;-)

EM10 was January 2014 and EM10ii September 2015 (21 months later) so possibly an EM10 mkiii would appear before an EM5 mkiii does? But neither likely to be released in 2017.

The E-M5 Mark lll will most likely have a 20 mp sensor and right now all of the production that was delayed by the earthquake in Japan is going to the E-M1 Mark ll. IMO this will also affect the timing of a new body being released.

When E-M5 was announced, Olympus had E-M1 in production starting phase by testing it side by side with E-7 (identical with E-M1, but just with mirror and OVF).

Then they released E-M1 a little over year later as they found it was superior to DSLR version.

When E-M1 was released, they had E-M5 Mk2 already in development end side.

Now when the E-M Mk2 has been out, I can only think that E-M5 Mk3 is already in production or at very final phases to be put through the assembly.

Likely the Mk3 will get out 2017 Q3-Q4 period and will have similar capabilities from E-M1 Mk2 but not beat it for stills, maybe focus more for video so it could gather more video features that then gets backported to E-M1 Mk2.

Anyways, if someone likes what E-M1 Mk2 has now but wants E-M5 body, then they need to wait Mk3. If they like what E-M5 Mk2 has now, there is no reason to not buy it, as Mk3 will not beat E-M1 line.

What can be updated on an E-M5mkIII without it coming to close to the E-MmkII in performance and price?

20 mpix sensor, the same as Pen F, plus basic 4K video. Probably also upgraded hi-res mode. But without the PD AF, 60 frames/sec speed (including pro-capture) and advanced video features.

Maybe a larger grip on the body?

Refurb E-M5II can already be gotten for just $540 when Olympus runs a sale. That was the price end of Nov.

Right now $719 black. Will it come down to below $540 when the mark III is announced?
It'll be 540 each time Olympus has a 25% off coupon code which they do every couple of months. Last time was end of November. Sometimes the coupon is only 20% though.

I picked up a lightly used EM5 2 for a good price a few months back, kind of anticipated the pricing on the EM1 2 being through the roof.

I have no need for AF-C or 18FPS and the sensor on my old GX8 really didn't offer anything meaningful over the 16mp one.

I think they will hold the EM5 3 back until they've shifted 50% plus of the EM1 2's they intend to sell - no way a EM5 3 dosn't come with the improved IBIS, 20mp sensor, better high res mode and bit better AF-C.

It will canibilise the EM1 2 for all but those who need the crazy speed, OTT build and AF.

what is the launch price of EM5 II?

Want to guess mark III pirce?

$1000 without lens?

$1500 without lens?

When Em5 mark II launch how much less expensive than M1 Mark I

I guess for most EM5 III is a better buy than EM1 II

features, it would probably be comparable but at a much more reasonable price

I guess for now i would not buy EM5 II. if I am going to have a MFT body better got the best.

I am very unhappy with my GM1, ugly jpeg, inaccurate metering , focus problem in just cloudy days

I don't trust Panasonic now. Others say differently but that is my experience

According to DXO it have higher color depth and better dyanamic range

dyanmic range important to me for landscape and the 4 more MP leave more room for digital zoom

i want the new 20MP sensor if I am buying a $1000 camera

Actually I think Panasonic continue using 16MP in newest expensive is a stupid idea

1 it look bad. 1 inch sensor 20MP , entry level APS-C 24MP

2 no reason to upgrade. If i don't need fast AF, 4k...etc

What's the point of upgrade from my GM1, basically the same sensor

If they are smart, should all use 20 MP sensor and high end and low end differentiate by

1 weather seal, very important to me

2 4k

3 C-Af

4 in body IS

continue using 16 MP very stupid idea, anyway I don't trust Panasonic

I am sure EM5 III would use 20 MP sensor

Cheap Yi M1 got a 20MP sensor, doesn't look like that is in short supply

If no new models in 2017,

just with the luxury priced Em1 II and E-PL8 "new" model, doesn't look like Olympus would have much sale in 2017,

I guess would have at least 1 new model by Christmas 20117

take your pick, either EM10 III or EM5 III, my guess is both will got 20 MP sensor unlike stupid Panasonic

hate that 16MP sensor and especially not at cheap price

The differences are within the margins of error for most testing methodologies, completely inconsequential in real world use.

The 20MP M43 sensors rated by DXO actually have less dynamic range than the EM1 (Mk1) (-0.3 EV) and essentially the same color depth (+-0.1 EV). Noise performance looks slightly better vs the EM1 but even here we're talking about ~1/8th of a stop, which again, you're never going to see or notice in real life.

Simply put, the 20MP sensor isn't going to make your images look better. It would be smarter to buy a new lens, either something faster to allow you to use a lower ISO or a new focal length that you don't currently have to take entirely different styles of photos. Both of these will make a much bigger difference in your images than a new body with the 20MP M43 sensor.

If you want a real jump in image quality at the sensor level, you need to go to a system with a larger sensor.

They've always had the modular grip available to give people options. IMO they should keep it this way.

And I was against upgrading from the EM5=>mkii because it felt like a side grade to me.

But waiting for a mkIII with a 20MP sensor and better hi-res mode sounds like a better option than forking out a lot of money for the em1mkii.
