It's time, -actually, the time has passed and they're (Panasonic) behind the 8-Ball, to make a Camera with a Larger Sensor.

There haven't been any real improvement in image quality for the 4/3 sensor, but there has been improvements in the processors that run these cameras, the Micro Four Thirds bodies are getting larger, so are the lenses, as APS-C cameras from Sony and Fujifilm are getting smaller, at least comparable in size to recent M43 bodies.

And when I look at say, the GX8, and its size, I wonder why is Panasonic wasting it's time on the four thirds sensor. Body-wise, It's similar in size to X-Pro 1/2, the a5000 series is smaller somewhat, yet both the Sony and the Fujifilm bodies have a APS-C sensor. That means better image quality, and low light performance.

Now I've been thinking about this for a few years now, but the G85 and now the GH5 has me really questioning Panasonic's decisions. Both the G85/GH5 are feature rich, I mean seriously, the GH5 has everything a camera can do for you, except the kitchen sink.

And that kitchen sink is a Larger sensor.

Now is the time. If anyone can make a new system, with lenses is Panasonic AND Samsung of course, but they bowed out. Nikon and Canon have decent APS-C bodies, yet their APS-C native lens selection is poor. Thier attempt at Mirrorless is laughable and Panasonic not only has the know-how, but they have the resources and the partners to make it happen. Leica has already made a Full Frame mirrorless camera with Panasonic's help, and they co-own their sensor division with Tower Jazz. Why wait for CanoNikon to finally take mirrorless serious? Panasonic needs to take the next step, and now is the time.

Fujifilm stepped up and created a Medium Format camera. Fujifilm is taking photography very serious, even though, they always have. Panasonic and Sony have been rivals in electronics for Decades, do you think they want to take a back seat to them? Right now, they are.

The GH5 is again, a very feature rich, very serious camera... There are shooter out there that like it, but won't go near it, because of the Sensor, NOT because it's a Panasonic.

Now, imagine a GH5 with the sensor of the Nikon D500...

No U.

Why not? The most popular camera trending on DPR right now, is the GH5, followed by 2 APS-C cameras, the Canon doesn't even have a decent native lens selection! If the GH5 had the same sensor in the D500, it would best that camera.

It's either Panasonic make smaller bodies, or move to a larger sensor. Or do both.

It's pointless for Panasonic, or Olympus for that matter, to start a whole new APS-C system that offers a sensor that gathers only 0.6 of a stop more light than M43.

Think of the enormous amount of research and development required to get an APS-C system to where we are now with M43.

Your other suggestion, to develop a full frame system, has some merit. Currently, only Sony offers a serious mirrorless full frame option. There is room for Panasonic and Olympus to jump in and gain market share before Nikon and Canon stick their beaks in.

Must be good to be you...

As for me , if I had a camera at the top of the chart i would not change it.

BTW, before this troll post, what were your previous names ?

Sir, there is the GX85, a model used to be lining in between the flagship of rangefinder form factor GX8, and the tiny GM1/5 or the entry class GFs (now GX850).

For dslr-like form factor, there is originally the Gs like G7 (before G85 which getting fat for the IBIS body, and getting weight for the all metal weatherseal case) lining below the flagship GHs...

So M43 can be as small as a mini compact (GMs), and there are reasonably size bodies for the right user to pick up. Big and heavy is just for certain specific needs only.

I would ask any merit for us M43 users that if we wish to go FF, why not simple join the boat of CaNikon instead of sticking with Panasonic or Olympus? No matter what, when going FF, we need a totally new system of accessories including FF lenses...

So set out the business case and convince them.

You can already buy FF Camera made by Panasonic, 4K video, v-log and all that included.

Coca-Cola is the most popular soft drink. The trend is pretty clear. There must be no Sprite, Root Beer, Ginger Ale or Dr. Pepper. Every soft drink sold should be a cola drink. There should be no choice offered to consumers. Since cola drinks are the best, all drinks should be cola drinks.

Thing is, much of the incredible processing power is enabled by the small, low DR sensors. Once I heard that MFT RAW is 12 bit, and not the 14 bit of larger sensors, all the mindblowing buffer/continuous performance immediately came into focus.

I suspect Panasonic might be wondering "Why are bothering to make cameras at all" rather than worrying about your slightly bonkers suggestions.

After all in a declining market, with a declining market share, do you really think making large sensor cameras which only appeal to a tiny audience anyway is going to make any difference to Panasonic's fortunes? It could actually make matters worse.

If they were smart, they would partner with a phone company and bring better video to smartphones.

Dedicated camera market is declining. It will be only for enthusiasts and professionals in the future.

  1. Having a camera on the top of that chart is good, dosent mean it's going to sell like that to the masses.
  2. Canon doesn't have a camera feature rich like the GH5. Nor does Nikon. However, they do have larger sensors. That means something to most photographers.
  3. If canon were to make a mirrorless DSLR, weather sealed, with 4K video, there'd be an uproar.

Is Coke actually better than the rest? -Or is it that it's one of the more popular and more accessible soda brands on the planet?

A full frame sensor is Better than a APS-C one, APS-C is better than a Four Thirds sensor.

What's next, Ford vs Ferrari?

Only Leica purist would buy that camera with that price tag. A Panasonic version would if course cost less. But that's a good idea, because Panasonic could share the mount, like they're doing with Olympus right now, and they could make more affordable lens without the Leica badge.
