Talk of Sigma’s 24-70mm f/2.8 Art lens have been swirling since February of 2015, but according to a fresh rumor, the wait might be over. The lens will reportedly be announced sometime in February, and Sigma plans to ship it this summer.

The tip comes from Canon Rumors, who has been told that the lens will be announced officially before CP+ on February 23rd. This, only if Sigma can stick to a shipping schedule that has the lens at retailers this summer. If, however, Sigma finds itself behind schedule come February, they’ll delay the announcement until after CP+.

Either way, you can start counting down the days and taking a closer look at Sigma’s 24-70 patentfrom last year; it seems Sigma’s long-awaited answer to Canon and Nikon’s 24-70mm f/2.8 workhorse lenses will be here before you know it.

I was thinking of pulling the trigger on a Tamron 24-70mm, but I'll hold off and see how this Sigma will do.

I need a walk around lens. Would be interested if the price is right.

There doesn't seem to be much interest in this lens. I started a thread couple of days ago which only got one response. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/58918603

You can find a link to CR there. It is supposed to be announced just before CP+
That forum gets very little action. Given how popular FF 2.8 zooms are, as well as Sigma's ART line, I think there will be plenty of interest. What's going to suck though is I'm certain this thing will weigh and cost more than the current version in pursuit of better MTF test results. I'm gonna stick with my Tamron unless this thing is a true demon.

What is really appreciated in canon`s 24-70 is its wonderful AF - catchy and fast. The images this lens produses are quite boring in terms of art purposes, you need primes for beautiful portraits. Thus, this lens is more for true-look pictures, where you need your reliable AF and versality from the focal range - weddings and other event shooters primarily. I see no point in getting a 24-70 from sigma with its unreliable AF. You need sharpness - use primes, you need a budget travel lens - use any of 24-105 or 24-70 f/4. I really see no market niche who needs a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8.

Sigma's AF, particularly on the ART series, is fine. You sound bitter :-D

Sigma sure is impressing these days. I wouldn't mind adding this one to my kit for sure. Seems everyone is pointing to CP+ for official word. Fingers crossed!

That's more a problem with DSLRs than the lenses themselves. I have a few third party zooms and they work fine on my A7II. And yea, with all the accolades the Sigma ART lenses are getting I could see how you would be less than thrilled about your expensive L zoom getting knocked off the throne by a third party lens.
Might work better on sony than on canon. I'm actually happy sigma started making good lenses, will force canon and Nikon to improve. Moreover, I was really after the 85 art lens, however, changed my mind in favor of the canon 135mm because of the AF. If I was into primarily relaxed portrait shooting, id get a sigma no doubts.

Finally the 24-70mm ART lens with IS is coming for Nikon as well as Canon Mounts, I think Canon should announce a new 24-70mm soon to save the sales of Native lens since the Sigma 24-70mm lens also features built in IS.

Good option, competition drives the price down. If this is close to the tamron in price, then I will seriously consider it.

Price and performance will be interesting to see. You look at the Sigma 24-105mm for example and it really didn't impress much in terms of either compared to there Art primes.

Personally I tend to think that the success of the Art lineup isn't really based on a big shift in know how from Sigma but rather the way they've released and positioned there products in the market.

In terms of releases F/1.4 primes tend to have a very long update cycle so a lot of their own brand rival lenses were actually quite old. This is less the case with zooms that Canon and Nikon tend to release more often(although Canons obviously lacking IS). I'm guessing as well that with zooms any knownhow advantage Canon and Nikon have likely has more of an impact with the complex designs involved.

In terms of market positioning as well I think Sigma made the jump of looking to sell its F/1.4 primes to a much larger market than Canon and Nikon had previously targeted there releases at(basically pro's and a small number of high end users)t price wise. The exception was obviously the 50mm where the own brand lenses were lower end very cheap offerings and Sigma offered something higher end in terms of price/performance.

Price wise I'm guessing it will be below the own brand offerings but then again Tamron is already there. Performance wise I'm guessing things might be a bit more questionable, likely better than the old lens which was well behind modern standards but up against stiff modern rivals.
