I currently use the Nikon D90 and am looking to replace it. I am torn between the Nikon D7200 and the Canon EOS 7D Mk II.

I know that my Nikon lenses would be compatible with the D7200. I am looking for something that is environmentally sealed for weather and dust. I shoot predominately landscape, birds and wildlife.

Any ideas and comments would be helpful. Thanks.

The D7200 is supposedly weather sealed, and I can confirm that mine has survived some harsh conditions, the worst being a full salt water drenching. Also the D7200 will take marginally better stills.

Have you considered the D500 too? If you're looking at the 7D mkii then you'll be looking at a whole stack of lenses for the different types of photography you like, it's probably going to cost you more than a D500 plus utilising your existing lenses!

Personally, I would go for the D7200... Some of the folks on this forum produce some pretty damn incredible wildlife work with it.

I hope this helps!

Do not switch systems. A D7200 would be fine. The D500 is probably too much camera for you. Actually you could 'upgrade' with any DX Nikon body that has the features you need.

I'm sure they're both excellent cameras but I don't see any justification for abandoning all of your current lenses to buy all new Canon stuff.

I upgraded within the last 60 days from an old D5000 to the 7200.

It's an AMAZING camera!

I'm considering switching from m4/3 and doing my due diligence. Looking at the D7200 as well. For what's its worth, Ken Rockwell mentions on his site that users contemplating the D7200 for wildlife should choose the 7D MKII due to its more advanced autofocus. I'm more of a landscape guy so I don't think it applies to me.

I think the most important factors are the number and quality of the lenses you already own, and how you feel with the camera in hands.

I don't know the 7D, which is certainly a fine camera. What I know is that the entry level Nikons are more comfortable to hold and better built than the Canons.

That doesn't apply to high end Canons, which are very serious tools.

can't comment on any of these cameras (except D90)

my comment is, if you are contemplating changing systems for weather sealing, I thought Pentax bodies are supposed to be well regarded in that department.

Thank you all for your input. I decided to stay with the Nikon line and went with the D7200.
Thanks for posting back. Let us know how it goes!

I had a D90, very good camera, still has a place today but your looking to upgrade? I'd recommend the D7200 over the Canon for one major thing? your already invested in Nikon? If your planning to do some serious wildlife,or sports, the Canon may be more capable? I use a D7100 and its no slouch, if your serious about getting serious with sports and wildlife [FPS] then I'd say look into the D500, It keeps crossing my mind.

Think about the future? you buy a camera and will most likely use it for several years, I've had my D700 since 2010, and my D7100 about 2.5 years, I look at upgrades but a lens upgrade is more on my mind

Good luck doing some serious research.

I've used Nikon (starting w/ F2) since 1965 so hear what I say through that 'filter'.

Like you I wanted to upgrade (this time from a D80 so APS-C was a strong likelihood). I did a lot of research and it came down to a readily available Nikon-refurbished D7200 and a D500. There are a lot of refurbished 7200's available now. I'm guessing that Nikon will shortly be introducing a 500 in a 7200 'skin' so there are plenty on the refurbished market. The 500 has an articulated LED Live View display (which I really wanted in my next back for ground level work) but the 7200 has seals against water splashes and dust. It's also heavier but it has the info LCD on top and some accessories are being significantly discounted. I went with the refurbished 7200. I've had it for less than a week but it has more than I will likely use for a while and a lot more than the D80. You'll be lovin' the ISO range too.

Have fun! Always have fun!

Good decision, you won't regret it. Enjoy :-)

I guess people don't read all the posts. He already made his choice and purchased it.
