Looks like Canon just swooped in and made all your 5700's a bit obsolete!

How many of the Nikon faithful will be moving up and over to a Digital Rebel?

Or, better yet, why would you buy a 5700 over a Digital Rebel?

Based on Canon's press release, the 300D does look like a very interesting camera for the price. Then again, all we have to go on at this point is a press release. Besides there's been an awful lot of swooping going on lately and there's bound to be a lot more of that between now and November.

Personally, I'm going to try and avoid swooning over any of this swooping until some real reviews come in. In the meantime, I don't have any complaints with the cameras I'm using now.

I went through my photo catalog last week and tried to trim out the mediocre images. I deleted nearly ALL the shots I took with the Canons.

I'll stick with the 5700 unless I decide I'm ready to carry around a D100 (or if a D75 shows up).

P.S. 5700 owners; I got to shoot with a D100 this week. It's 10X faster. Focus lock is nearly instant. It is a bit heavier though.

Not really. The 5700 is approaching its end-of-life cycle and the 300D is waiting to enter the market. In this rapidly changing digital world, a product can only take the lead for a couple of months and perhaps never longer than two years. Then, it will be replaced by a new one. Thus, by the time the 300D will hit the street, another cam will make it obsolete. This is very similar to the CPU war in the PC sector.

Digital Rebel? No way because I have no Canon lenses.

If I start clean, I may take the Digital Rebel based on the press release. But, we normally don't pay $1000 just based on spec of paper. Do we?

Yes, of course you are right. But the 5700 really isn't that old. Amazing how fast things change with chip technology enhancements.

Sound reasoning.

I certainly would wait until some reviews have been completed by this and a couple of other sites. As it appears to be a 10D with very few missing features and a plastic body I suspect the image quality will be untouched at this price point. Certainly will be fun and interesting to watch. I've never seen so many posts on a product announcement as there seems to be with this camera.

Now here is the Nikon snobbery I was hoping to hear!

Why would you spend more for less camera? The camera body (which you pay dearly for) is really the only thing the D100 has over the Digital Rebel.

It's not snobbery. I've owned 5 Nikons and 3 Canons. The Nikons produced better pictures. Way better pictures.

Actually, I'm hoping the price of the D100 will drop closer to the D300 but I'd probably still pay several hundred more for the D100. I spend so much time and effort on my photos, a few hundred more for the right camera seems reasonable.

So far all we have from the D300 is specs and I've learned not to put much faith in those. Let the mass consumers buy on specs. Show me the photos!

I'm waiting on the D200 to rear its pretty head. I expect I will then have my choice of $800 D100's. Let's see -- a plastic 300 for $900 or a D100 for $800. Let me think about that for about a nanosecond before deciding. :)

As far as obsolete??? It takes more than Canon to make a Nikon Anything less.

So you admit to trolling then? Your initial post was designed to generate a negative response? Interesting.

Umm... ok... lets see canon has cut a heap of features out of the 300D and the body for people who take their cameras through hell and back is damn important. So sure... d100 300d same camera different body - right. Read the specs.

The camera may be good who knows, but I often read through the canon forum for entertainment. These guys love to wind each other up and sometimes the responses are plain rude.

Not sure I would beneifit as much as I have from this forum over there.
Shame really.

Just my thoughts based on what I have read.

Looking at Canon's samples this camera would cost £3,300 when the lenses are taken into account. And you still end up with a less functional plastic body.

No thanks

Ditto! Besides, I haven't got my 5700 figured out yet. Why in tarnation would I want to drive myself nuts with something else???
