43 Rumous now claim that Pana 100-300mm II is coming.

To be announced tomorrow, among other updated lenses.

That's interesting.

It appears Panasonic are also updating the Panasonic 45-200 into mkII version as well? So does this mean we're not getting the 50-200mm 2.8-4 for the time being?

From my understanding, some companies like Panasonic release the more expensive lenses first before releasing the cheaper alternative. The same thing happened with the 25mm, 42.5mm and the 100-400/100-300,

I think they just make minor updates to support dual is.
The 100-300 was among three or four older lenses that Panasonic said would never be Dual IS capable. Presumably the OIS was not up to that challenge. The current 100-300 is a "Mega OIS" lens, and the rumor says that the new one will be a "Power OIS" lens, so perhaps it is, at least, an entirely new OIS mechanism in this lens.

That would be a significant upgrade for Panny body users. If it also supports DFD, that would be an even bigger deal. Maybe they'll even smooth the zoom mechanism.

I'm pretty sure that all Panasonic lenses support DFD. Panasonic bodies that support DFD use a profile of the Panasonic lens' focusing characteristics to autofocus more rapidly.

IIRC, DFD is a feature on the (newer) camera bodies - i.e. all lenses are capable of DFD with the proper body.

Whatever OIS changes they make, the MK2 will get a cosmetic upgrade to match the recent Panasonic lenses.

An improved 100-300mm MM2 would make a very capable "enthusiast" zoom lens for those that don't need the perforce of the 100-400mm PL.

It might end up being like a lot of their Version II updates and just change cosmetically. Maybe it'll end up being an all black lens.

Lets hope it includes a tripod colar this time.

Unlike 12-35 and 35-100, this one needs real revamping. Power IS suggests improved stabilization, compatible with Dual IS. But it also needs faster AF and improved aperture so that it does not limit burst shooting and C-AF. An optional tripod collar would be nice, but I don't expect that.

I expect the optical formula to remain identical, although it could probably also receive new lens coatings, which could potentially improve contrast.

And if I remember from the time I researched it, there was one pretty common mechanical failure it suffered from. Would be nice to see that handled.

All in all, a thorough upgrade in all the areas I mentioned would even justify some increase in price, I think. That 100-400 is amazing, but not sure I would ever be willing to spend that much just to get my toes into shooting birds. A modern 1000-300 would be much more tempting (I almost pulled the trigger on Oly 75-300 last time there was a cashback on it).

Keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

I hope Panasonic has made similar upgrade to the 45-200mm as they did for the 14-140mm. I'm hoping for decreased size and better optics, along with modern focusing and stabilization.

45-200mm was the first lens announced for Micro Four Thirds, along with the 14-45mm, and definitely should be updated if they want to keep it in the lineup.

If slow aperture and focus is fixed in 100-300mm mk II, 45-200mm is fully modernized, and if 50-200mm f/2.8-f/4 is really coming, Panasonic long telezoom options look pretty impressive. There is still the 100-400mm for maximum reach and IQ, the small 45-175 for great IQ and power zoom, the tiny 45-150mm as a decent budget option, and I guess the 14-140mm superzooms should be mentioned here as well.

It was labelled as "under study". And even if, the lens roadmap was showing it appearing no sooner than in 2018.

I would hope they give it two ED elements at the front, as it should have. And yes, some coating.

But expect a €800-900 price range. Definitely not the former €500-600 price point, IMHO.

Thank god, there's no way I could justify the cost of the 100-400 to my significant other but I've resisted buying the old 100-300 because of the poor C-AF performance. An updated version will be greatly appreciated!

Yes, if they really give it a thorough update like that, that's kinda what I would expect. Might actually be worth it, depending on how well they manage to improve it. I'm officially intrigued now and looking forward to the announcement :-)
