G1 Quality problems

You are just a very tiny, tiny little person. Someone needs to teach you some manners. People like you make me embarrassed to be a human being. I hope one day you get what you deserve...a big fist in your big mouth.
My brother bought G1 two week ago, and he discover that this camera
is inferior quality ,not only have dead dot on LCD display , but
also have dust inside in the len and error detection on the battery
status after recharge
( need to open the battery cover and insert the battery again )

Pic quality is good, feature & flash light also ok, but i think is
this G1 really made in japan ?
as my experience, japan make camera is high quality product, But
this G1 quality is poor than other japan make camera.
Dear all

problems on it !!
(eg. there is a dust inside the len, LCD dead dot"s", noisy when

I've had my G1 for less than a week and the only complaint I have is that I
sometimes get a magenta cast in the photos. I took about 50 shots today
though and didn't have any color issues at all! I'm wondering if the CCD will

see colors differently with time, or if the lighting and temperature are making a
difference.

About the quality issues... I don't have ANY of the problems being reported
regarding dirt or burnt pixels or lines in the LCD. After handling all of the
camera's I considered buying (about every 3.3mp camera made) I believe the
G1 is among the sturdiest of them all. I was also impressed with the fit and
finish of the 990 but didn't like the operating software or the severe cyan cast
in the photos. Perhaps certain parts of the world are getting problematic
cameras more so than others? I bought mine in the USA and paid $849.

If you are considering a G1 but are afraid of the "issues" just be sure to buy

from a reputable dealer that will take it back if you and the G1 don't get along.

Hi GTO,

the problem with the facts you mentioned is that it is very debatable whether they indicate really a lack of quality or are just (more or less) normal. I have to admit my first reaction was also: "Huh, is that guy from Germany?" :-)

But maybe you haven't had much experience with digicams. Let's go through the isssues.

1. LCD flicker: I have a G1 myself. What I did notice: in low-light conditions, the preview gets very noisy. This is not a problem of the LCD, however, but caused by the camera having to amplify the signal delivered by the CCD. This is more or less visible with every digicam I know (I've had S20, CP 990).

The G1 introduces an additional kind of "flicker" when you move it, because it readjusts the lens aperture whenever there is more or less light. More visible than on other cameras, but to me not a problem.

2. Dust speck in lens:
I have that problem :-) However, I searched
in photo.net and found out that
  • it is a common problem even with very
expensive lenses (those lenses are not
totally sealed),
  • as long as it's only a speck, it doesn't degrade image quality.
Since the lens of the G1 is moving, a little dust finding its way into it is unavoidable in the long run anyway.

3. Dead pixel in LCD:
A non-issue. You use the LCD for
  • data (aperture etc.)
  • image preview
  • image review.
Not for: image presentation.

A few dead pixels are of no relevance to the intended use of the LCD, and if you look into

the manual, they state that some non-working pixels are allowed. Why can't they all be perfect? Cost. It is impossible to get all pixels working every time, an increase in quality is reached by simply throwing away more LCD matrixes. That would increase cost, and for what? Most customers don't care (i.e. not enough to pay more)if it does not show up on the pictures.

4. Noisy lens:

My lens makes some_noise, but a lot less than both the S20 and the CP990. If it's just one camera with a louder zoom, OK, I would avoid that. Maybe a question of production tolerances.

I have had anikon CP700 for 2 years, the G1 I have had for 2 weeks
is so much better in ALL aspects except MACRO mode, so please STOP
this negative attitude towards this great camera, NO CAMERA AND
NOBODY IS PERFECT

What is going on with all these racist posts?! They are certainly not the reason I frequent these forums. It's surprising to me that people like this still exist in "civilized" countries. I haven't come across attitudes like this in years.

Hi all,

The reason I asked whether the camera cost HK$5000 or not is as follow. I was in HK recently and was quoted HK$5000 for the G1 which is a grey import. Now this term could mean anything from Japanese model to...rejects !!!! It could be that there is a batch of sub standard cameras that did not pass QA at the factory it was due for disposal, somehow this may have found its way onto markets such as HK. No guarantee was offered.

One could still pay HK$6800 and get the faulty camera if bought from less reputable dealer.

I recently took pocession of my G1 and must say, I have not had any problems whatsoever. In fact it functions flawlessly and the photos are top notch.

I bought this camera after having found many pictures I had taken with my Canon S-20 having a blue tint and extremely grainy and colorless in lowlight conditions. I brought the S-20 back as it seemed to be getting worse and "upgraded" to the G1.

I use it together with a IBM 340 Microdrive and have not experienced any problems at all. The color rendition and detail can easliy keep up with, the bench-mark in that price segment, the Nikon 990.

As the store in your case that is selling these G1s has so many, makes me think that these might be factory rejects. Here on the east coast I can't think of one retailer that has three or four of these sought after camers kicking around.
Try buying the camera through a different retailer.
Regards
Mike

Hi I am wing duk cho. I am from the province of Manchuria. I do
not use vowels when I speak English. I am so freaking stupid I
bought a peice of garbage Nikon Coolpix and now my garlic eating
rear is trying to flame the G1. so sorry so sorry.
Umm, duh...I am cybercat, a dumb, redneck, racist that lives in a cool trailer park and I have the most awesome camera on the planet, the Canon S100! Well, at least I tell everyone I do. I really don't own a camera, since I am still in Jr. High School and all I can afford is the subsidized lunch. I spend my class time in the library on the computers I wish I could afford, but I can't get a job at McDonalds, since I am too slow.

I like making fun of people from other countries that are too stupid to learn English properly, even thought they already speek at least one language other than english. That's no excuse, they should speak English as their native language! They should all buy Canon S100's since they rule! No other camera is worth anything, even if it is made by Canon. Canon should have stopped after it made the S100 and only offer the S100 forever! It rules! I rule!

I would post my pictures from my S100, but I don't have a way to download them to the computers at school...yea, that's it! They won't let me bring....ummmm, my ZIP drive, yea, that's it. They are afraid that I might accidentally bring a virus on a ZIP disk, so I can't post pictures on network of my great S100 pictures. In fact, I don't want to post pictures, since they are so awesome, everyone will steal them and take credit for taking them!

So, learn English, take back your G1's and buy two S100's! They rule! Cybercat rules!

Cybercat,

I appreciate hearing opinions from anyone on the G1. If someone is
willing to try and post in a foreign languge, more power to them.
And you . . . you atack them for their difficulties! You're
disgusting! You've never tried to learn or speak a foreign
language, maybe. It's difficult, and the one thing you don't need
is arrogant rednecks criticizing you for your mistakes.

Be more forgiving of people in difficulty, be more understanding,
and please, shut up!

Greg
How could he even contemplate learning a second language when he can't even master English!

He is obviously so mentally challenged that he can barely keep from drooling on himself! I'm suprised he hasn't spouted about his S100 yet and he's actually bad mouthing Canon, his favorite camera maker!

He shows his obviuos character shortcomings and his lack of maturity. It's suprising he has even been able to learn how to use a computer or other electronic device!

People like him should be sterilized to keep the gene pool from being contaminated. It's obvious that the world doesn't need or want more people like him!

Hey, Guy, give it up. You are obviously not much smarter than Cybercat! At least you could have used a false e-mail account for all of your false ID's! If you were smart enough!

I received my G1 a week ago. I've had previous experience with the S100 Elph, and a Kodak DC20 (!).

My G1 is in great shape. LCD panel is in fine shape. No dust on the lens.

Everything seems to work as advertised. I did notice the purple tint off the edge of some lights (sodium vapor lights?) in a warehouse. Nothing to make me return the camera, though.

John

My compliments,

Heh, heh, heh... I got a chuckle from that gene pool remark. Naturally, I couldn't agree more except to say we should also include this "******-o-cat's" next of kin as well. We shouldn't take any chances now... should we?

Shame on me for thinking these sort of thoughts. Better weshould rehabilitate these sort by sending them on a fact-finding mission to other countries. There they may discover some humility and enlightenment. If not, their remarks and attitudes would probably get them killed off. Easy for someone to make these sort of chicken remarks... Eh?

With mild regret for dimwitted racists everywhere,

TG
