Where is Phil?

The kodak and ricoh cameras are not in the same class as the F828 and the 300d. Notice that all of these cameras are less than 5mp.

Anyhow, there would be an advantage to Sony. Presumably they could keep the interest high in their camera for a longer period. You have to ask yourself why did Sony release information about their camera before it is ready; whereas, the canon is generally production ready and will ship very soon. Don't try to second guess the in workings of the marketing departments at Sony or Canon. They have a lot more information then we do and they make their decisions based on that information.

Anyhow, I could be wrong about why we have seen nothing. It was just a supposition and nothing more.

But as I asked before, how do you explain it?
If you checked this and other site, they have all carried news
about the new 10x Kodak and Ricoh cameras since the release of the
news of the Sony. I don't see the particular benefit for either
Sony or reviewers from this arrangement. One week will not provide
any advantage to Sony - the camera will not be available for some
time anyway, and all major sites published previews of the camera
at the same time, so it's not like one can gain a competitive
advantage from keeping info about other cameras under wraps.

We have never been offered, would never ask or accept payment for any news article or review.
Why should Canon et alii not pay for a service and advertising
effect as they also have to do it in print media?

Internet is not for free! There is always somebody who has to pay
the bill.Phil has a great site and a huge audience. If a camera
manufactuerer wants to have access to this audience, they should
also pay for it.

At the end of the day they make money with their products too :)

P.S. my alternative explanation would be that Canon published this
news ahead from the original time-plan because of the Sony F828
news and nobody had its ready for today...

No coverage on any of the Canon announcements? Even when Canon
Japan and Canon Europe official websites have posted them???

It's not just the 300D, but the A80 too.

Ridiculous. No one manufacturer would ever conceive of such a thing let alone try to impose it on an independent site.
Just a thought and it is probably not correct, but lets see when
Phil, IR, Steves and others make their official announcement.

Bravo again! It would be a sad day indeed if news updates or reviews happen only because they are paid for. http://www.dpreview 's success is due in no small way to its immense popularity with users who want free, easy access to useful and unbiased news and reviews, with uncompromised objectivity and journalistic integrity. Keep the site informative and useful, and the readers will keep coming and growing, and the advertisements will come in too and the beneficial cycle continues.

Of course, 'getting paid' does not necessarily mean cold hard cash changes hands. I think this web site would have a greatly different character if Phil had to go out and personally purchase every camera he wished to review.

The tendering of preproduction and production cameras for review ( even if they have to be returned) surely represents in some way a 'payment' for 'services rendered'.

Mind you, I do NOT think there is anything wrong with that relationship as long as the reviewer has the final say over what goes in the review.

I think it is obvious that Phil scrupulously maintains that independence and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for his integrity.
We have never been offered, would never ask or accept payment for
any news article or review.

We quite regularly see cameras which have been bought, as you can imagine most of my friends and family are digital camera converts. On several occasions I have deliberately tested these cameras and so far have not seen any difference between the 'production' cameras we receive from the manufacturer and those in the shops.

That's good news. I'd hate to think any manufacturer would 'cherry pick' a camera for review.

The only thing of value to this thread is the fact that we are hearing from Phil. It is always enjoyable to hear from Phil and I wish he would speak up more often. Other than that I can't find any indication that he favors Canon.

If Phil has any fault it is that he is too enamored with technology and photography and maybe loves too much the equipment that finds his doorstep. He loves the toys and probably waits with baited breath for the next camera to arrive. Oops, that's not a fault. That is a great job to have for a living. Keep up the great work Phil!

...is probably because they are both the "Big Dogs" in their respective fields. For some reason this drives some people nuts.

I hope both Phil and Canon continue to go from success to success, myself...
