A99 II 4k overheated

It sounds like the heat-sink wasn't mounted properly. Its pretty common. I'd take it in for servicing. The A99II we've been testing at work had no issues, they've been running it non-stop for two weeks now.
I bet sending it in for service at this point would mean it'd be gone for a pretty long while.

I have no clue what the room temperature was, I was in a hoody and I was warm but not uncomfortable or sweaty, so around your standard temp in a room, I'd guess.

The camera has a battery grip, was shooting single shots, IS was on, I think I totaled around 450 photos and 9 clips over 2 hours. It wasn't on the whole time, I shot a few photos with my A7s and there was a break between bands. The longest clip was the one it overheated on, 2 minutes 07 seconds.

I did a 30 minute 4k recording of "Friends" playing on the TV. Dialpad got warm but nothing else. It kept going till my almost dead battery died.

But it might help Sony figure out the problem faster, hardware or software, etc.

If no one send back to Sony, they may never know such problem. ;-)

Yesterday I was shooting photos and shot a few clips of a musician. I was recording a clip in 4k and it stopped due to heat. I was surprised to see that happen, figured it wouldn't be an issue on a bigger Sony body.

I don't' really consider that to be a lot of work..... but OK. I'd be interested to see how long 4k can go when first turned on and doing nothing else.
That's because it isn't. That it over heats is ridiclous.
I agree. Wow...stunned. You have to just shake your head here.
Well, it's concerning but not ridiculous - or totally surprising for that matter. May be part of the rushed-to-market aspect of the OS that we see some other evidence for - clearly the LCD and EVF dimming under 4k is part of an effort to reduce electricity consumption (AKA heat), and given how much information they are moving off that sensor, perhaps we are underestimating how much heat is being generated. An interesting question is whether shooting in crop mode (super 35) is going to prevent this problem, have no effect, or (unlikely IMO) make it worse. Heat from a FF sensor is potentially (by surface area) 8 times what an RX10III has to deal with. That's a lot of heat, and there is no way that the A99ii body has 8 times the surface and radiating areas to dispose of all that thermal energy.

Wow, well at least I'm not the only one having the issue. I honestly haven't used it for video since so I haven't tested it further.

Yup this blows my mind too. Maybe something they need to tweak in a firmware update? This body should let be experiencing this problem. : /
The last time i had such a problem was with my computer laptop 12 years ago. I opened it up and it turns out they had the heat sink glued to the cpu. apparently the glue was not transferring the heat. How do i know? because i unglued it, cleaned out all the glue and simply press fit it in the tight compartment. It never shut down due to heating ever again.

No problem. Someone else did it - with smashing success. Read here .
Cheers,

I tested it with my A99II. Ambient temperature was 24.4°C. I first recorded super 35 (APS-C) in 4k at 25p 100M. Airplane mode off, steadyshot on. It recorded until the automatic stop after 29 minutes was reached. I forgot to look on time, so I noticed half an hour later that the recording was completed. Then I started recording with almost the same setting, but instead of super 35 the full frame was recorded and stedy shot was switched off. I had a look at the camera fter 20 minutes. It was still recording, but displayd a little orange temperature warning sign. Short afterwards the battery was empty, so I couldn't test if it would have done the full 29 minutes again. Camera was warm at the thumb rest on the back side and the battery was also warm.
