I am considering getting an Ott Light for my Studio's color station. Does anyone have experience with Ott Lights for color critical work?

I cannot find their specific color temp but the look a whole lot like a D65 light box.

Anyway, I was wondering if any other pros were using this as a viable solution.

Thanks,

Brent

I have been using one for a few years and it does a very good job for me. A lot of others use this light, including some pros.

If I remember correctly, it emits a 5000k light which is an industry standard. However, someone with the new Gretag profiler (has an adapter to read the temp of ambient light) said that their Ott measured about 5500k. That is still pretty close to ideal for judging prints.

well, that would be in the zone then,

I'm glad to hear you are pleased with yours. For the price I guess you really can't go wrong.

Does it have any quirks you don't like, metamerism problems, etc.

Thanks for the reply,

I have the large desk lamp version...The only problem I have ever had with it was when I first got it. I simply could not get the damn bulb in correctly. Once I did, it worked flawlessly, and has ever since.

There are cheaper versions out there, but the experts from the old Leben Epson List said they had "spikes" that made them less reliable as a critical viewing light source.

Also, I think I read that Ott was producing a newer super lamp a year or two back. Look them up wtih Google or whatever and go to their site. They used to be very vague about their product lines and I got more info from resellers' sites (and from the various lists I read at the time).

I have had one for a few years and it works pretty well, but it does cause problems with some paper/ink combinations in the form of metamerism - i.e. color shifts.

There was an extensive discussion of this on the Profile Prism forum a while back and I did some checking and sure enough it was causing a color shift on prints from my S9000.

I would personally go with a non flourencent (sp?) source today. There are a few, but I don't recall the links right now... sorry,

Frank
