On cnet.com they say "Sony has no plans to make lens converters for the camera, and the warranty won't cover damage caused by third-party attachments."

Sure would be nice to have a teleconverter to bump up that 7x.

Chuck,

The new camera has the same 58mm thread that the F717/F707 does. This mean that any Teleconverter which works for the F717 will also work for the F828.

You don't have to buy a "Sony" branded teleconverter. Olympus also have a very good teleconverter which many people love. I use the Olympus B-300, many others are using the Olympus TCON-17. These teleconverters will give you 1.7X extra zoom.

This mean that any Teleconverter which works for the F717 will also
work for the F828.
But the 828 lens moves where the filter threads are (see Phil's review), so it's not clear that the new lens mechanism can support the Sony teleconverters.

I am also worried about that, but I will keep my 717 anyway and have my HGD17 permanently attatched to it.

As long as the front element don't rotate I see no problem attatching it - the problem is: does the new lens design cooporate with the 1,7x and 0,7x converters? The 0,7x would give a 19,6mm ultra wide - sure hope it works!

There seems to be some disagreement on this subject. Image resourse says..

"Sony offers both wide-angle and telephoto converters as accessories for the F828, which mount in front of the lens via the 58mm filter threads that line the inside lip of the lens barrel. (The same thread diameter as the F717.)"

Can you provide a link to the page on Cnet?

One of the top reasons I would get the F828 is to have a second camera around which could take my Sony teleconverter lens. If it can't take the weight then I believe I will have to pass on this attempt and look elsewhere for a lens at least in the 300mm area.

The converter lens setting is for one specific wide angle lens accessory, the older model one. The HG0758 converter doesn't use it, and it's not used for teleconverters.

Godfrey
There is not Sony setting for a teleconverter. I think the
converter lens setting is for the wide angle lens.

TurboTed,

I wouldn't make any judgement based on CNET's opinions. From reading their very short article, I don't sense that they even have an F828 physically to look at. Anyone of us on this forum could have written a much more informative article than the CNET one.
