Hi all,

I received my M5 kit this week which included the free mount adapter. This was a welcome bonus until I realised Canon has removed the tripod mount which seems like a pretty petty penny pinching tactic and reduced the usefulness with longer lenses. I can't seem to find the tripod adapter anywhere to buy!

Very disappointing Canon

It was very disappointed that Canon took away the major part of the adaptor !

I cannot find any reasons why Canon did that...

I knew that adopting M5 kit early is not a good idea. Got the old one with the mount, and am not really willing to buy another one, or rather half of it.

I feel sorry for you guys, but that´s what you get from Canon - Milking, milking, milking. That´s what they do to us, Canon users.

Honestly, I don't think I ever used the tripod foot and promptly removed it from all of my adapters. It was just a clunky protrusion that was always in the way. All of my bigger lenses already have their own tripod collars. All of my lenses without tripod collars are all small enough to easily just mount the tripod to the camera.

What lenses are you using that you think would benefit from using the tripod foot on the EF-M adapter?

As for "penny pinching", that tripod foot is easily 1/4-1/3 of the total cost of the adapter. It looks simple, but there quite a bit going on there.

I hope Canon starts selling this "footless" version in the open market as a cheaper alternative to the existing adapter.

The tripod mount of the adaptor is marginally lower than the tripod mount of the camera.

Hence, if you use a large quick-release plate you might find that you can't mount it on the camera if it extends far, like my Manfrotto 501 plates, without it ending up at a slight angle, rather than flat.

and then, because of that I can't move the rear LCD as it is now tight against the plate.

Maybe use the tripod socket that's on the long lens? Seems like a petty complaint.

Hi Andy,

At least you got the adapter free. I am not sure if anyone in the USA received a free adapter...

Not all long lenses, and certainly not a lot of 'large' front heavy lenses, have a tripod socket. So it can leave the set up a little unbalanced.

From the manual

Precautions when using this adapter with a tripod

When shooting with a tripod, do not use the camera’s tripod mount socket while the adapter is attached. Be sure to use the tripod mount included with the adapter.

I have a 70-300L with no mount and no socket. I would like to have one.

I've used it on the 100L macro (pretty heavy). I can't think of many lenses I would use it on other than that.

I would agree that is quite disappointing. Canon advertises this item as having a detachable tripod adapter to provide support for longer Canon lenses. Is there a threaded hole in the adapter you received to receive the tripod adapter? I guess the next thing to go will be the body and dust caps to go along with not including lens hoods with non L lenses.

There is a threaded hole for the tripod Adapter with the new m Adapter minus the foot. Works ok with my tripod... Cheers.

You can buy a genuine Canon or generic tripod collar specifically for your lens. It will balance far better than the foot on the EF adapter.

Yes, I guess I could, but they could also include that piece if they were a honorable company who says that they are including the adapter but then tell you what it really is after you place your order and take your money. Just bothers me a bit, I'll get over it. I've had three of them and they all came with that piece. I should not have sold them.

Just curious, I checked mine but the female on the mount is 3/16" rather than the 1/4" on my tripod. It sort of looks like it might be stepped down.

What size is the mounting bolt on your tripod?

The Canon UK Store discloses "What's in the box" "Mount Adapter EF-EOS M (without Tripod Adapter)".

There's no confusion on the Canon USA Store, because they don't include an adapter at all. :-)

Sorry, you are correct I just checked it again. I tried to screw my tripod attachment all the way. No good, though the instructions state tripod socket CU 1/4 X1. I think it is a manufacturing error. Lucky I have both the old and new. The old one works fine. I apologise for my error.
