Hi everyone.

Being an em5 user I've been awaiting the new em1 for quite a while however the price of $2800 Australian dollars for the body took me aback a bit. And with a pro lens it will be nudging $4000.

Im just wondering about alternatives for that kind of coin. One option is to buy the pro zoom for my em5 and wait for the price to come down and the other is to look at the Sony a6- a7 and fuji alternatives which you'd probably get a body and pro lens for the price of the em1.2 body alone.

I mostly shoot landscapes and a bit of surfing. The new Olympus looks fab but it's double the price of the em1.

Thoughts?

Cheers

Depends how much you have tied up in M43. I don't know about Sony, but the X-T2 goes for $1,600 US vs $2,000. If you're looking at the equivalent focal length and aperture to the Oly 12-40/2.8, you're looking at the Fuji 16-55/2.8, which goes for $1,200 US. If you look at my gear list I have quite a bit tied up in Fuji, which I plan on unloading sometime after the first of the year. I was not that impressed with the X-T1 for event type photography.

Buy the EM1 mark 1, it's a great camera!

If you want to shoot landscapes, and especially surfing, I'd wouldn't say anything from Sony has suitable sealing to make me comfortable.

The fuji is pretty decent in that regard from what I gather, but then you run into issues with focus speed for surfers and apparent problems with foliage due to the xtrans sensor.

So within the mirrorless world, there isn't really much of an alternative from other systems. I guess a 'pro' lens and perhaps grip for your EM5 are your best bet for the moment.

For landscapes and surfing I'd look at the Fuji X-T2. The wide lenses for landscapes are really good and you have a few to choose from. You also have a number of weather sealed lenses.

Please consider the Pen-F.
Good Looking and Very functional.
that is my top choice + a grip for when I need it on a larger lens.

Being ready financially to buy another camera, after recently getting into m43 with an E-M5ii:

All the build up and hype got me excited as well. Now the cat is out of the bag I'm settling on buying myself possibly a GX80/85 as a second body. GX80 as opposed to a G80 (now the hype on the G80 has settled).

Personally I'm wanting a camera to pull out good shots, which after all anything from an EM-1(i/ii) to a GX can do, and after reading all the blustering I'd rather put my money into another good acoustic guitar.

Which is something that really gives an instant 'thats what I paid for' feeling. Even if you play only in a mediocre way. My middle of the road photos could be taken on a simple TZ as an EM-1 and look the same. But the quality of sound from a good handmade guitar....

;-) That's my tuppence anyway...

For landscapes, the Sony would do very well. However, I am not sure what telephoto length you need for surfing, but there are no good, long telephoto lenses in E-mount. The new Fuji would also work well for landscapes, but would be limited for a long telephoto to the 100-400 which is probably long enough but from the images I have seen it appears to be no better than the Olympus 75-300mm or Panasonic 100-300mm lenses for a much higher price.

For landscapes, either the Olympus E-M5 MkII or the Pen F on a tripod with High Resolution would be excellent and at least as good as a FF. In regular resolution they would also be good. The weakness of these two is the CAF performance for surfing.

The current E-M1 would be fine for both landscapes and surfing, but would not have the high resolution option of the E-M5 MkII or Pen F.

The new Panasonics may be as good as the Olympus offerings, but I will leave that to the Panasonic users.

...but the E-M1 Mark 1 plus 12-40mm f2.8 is currently available for $1299 US (less than the original release price of $1399 US for the body only).

That's not just a steal of a deal...it's highway robbery.

Cambuy has the pro 12-40 for $650 AUD local stock.

Can't go wrong with that.

No, it was a great camera last week. Now it's junk. : )

To the OP, seems like it'd make more sense for a budget conscious photographer to stay with a system they already own, so the E-M1 MkI may be a very good choice for you. Buy one on the cheap now, save your pennies, and snap up a used MkII (or wait for a sale). If you buy an Olympus PRO telephoto lens now, it'd work fine on a MkI, and offer a weather sealed solution for you that you can take to your future MkII or MkIII.

The G85 might also make you happy.

Panasonic?

Even if the present very capable line up does not impress there is bound to be a new flagship model soon enough.

Also don't just write off the GX85 and G85 simply because they are cheaper and therefore cannot possibly be good enough. As much as the E-M1ii might be too expensive aka: not good enough for its RRP.

Somewhere there must be something that is priced just right for the feature set it offers.

Yep that is a good deal but don't see it being offered over here as a bundle.

Best price for the E-M1 I have seen is $1148 and the 12-40mm $649 ($150 discount). That's about $400 less then I paid for this combo 3 years ago.

The exchange rate is not helping at this time.

The 40-150mm F2.8 + MC 1.4 is $1459. So you could get the E-M1 with this combo for around $2,600.

But don't think the focal length is long enough for surfing.

OP didn't say what lens he has.

I'm exactly where you are with my Oly EM5. Now with the EM1 M2 out of my expense range I have been looking at the Pentax K3 ii, the Fuji X-T2 and I will look at the Panasonic.

With Oly now going further out of my expense range I can rationalize even going to a gently used Nikon D7xxx kit. I have seen two Nikon kits (a D7000 and a D7100) for about $1,000 US on Craigslist this weekend. Both of these bodies have less than 3,000 clicks and come with the body and two good lenses.

I do not have too much invested in Oly, and I would likely keep the EM5 as a back up. But, with Oly pricing going up to these price levels I can go over to one of the big names and stay within budget (buying used). I might end up carry something a bit heavier, but in the long run I found a better horse to ride for the long run.

Bummer.

If not needed, OP could sell the 12-40mm lens to help fund purchase of his desired lens.

Thanks for the input guys. Canon also are releasing the mirrorless eos m5 soon. Its native lenses are limited and only 1080 video but if the adapters work for the canon lens catalogue it might be worth a look too

Right now B&H has the E-M1 with the 12-40 f/2.8 for $1299. That body currently goes for $1,100 and that lens costs $1,000. Think of it as getting the 12-40 for $200. I know this probably doesn't help the OP, or myself unfortunately, but if anyone was thinking about buying into m43 that's a great deal for a very capable kit. Wish I had gotten mine that cheap.

EDIT: looks like Amazon has the same deal so not as great as I first thought but still a good deal.
