I want to buy an extra zoom lens for my Canon 7D mark II, and 5 D mark IV which I mostly use for bird photography. Which lens is the best.

Go with Tamron 150-600mm G2 , do not hesitate.

If you do not like, you doing it to me gift. ;-)

I wait, to see some BIF, made by you with Tamron G2. ;-)

Best regards, Valeriu

I do believe that the Tamron 150-600 G2 is better then the Sigma C. When it comes to the sigma S, I am not completely sure, but the G2 is probably the best bang for the buck out of the three, judging from online reviews.

I tend to differ, I think the sample images I see look really good (for a 150-600 at least). Not saying the Sigma C is not capable, it is more then capable of taking great images, and in the used market one of the best deals for wildlife shooters. From what I've seen, I prefer the Tamron.

Tamron G2 is better lens then G1, no doubts about that.

BUT, at the moment it is utterly impossible to say which one, Tamron G2 or Sigma Contemporary is better, as there is still no professionally conducted side-by-side reviews of those two lenses.

I am sure that IQ is very close, and difference is very, very small between them, if any. And sample variations will probably have greater impact to IQ difference then advantage in actual IQ of any of them.

So it is up to your personal preferences to choose which lens better suits you regarding balance, VR, FT adjustment and handling in the field. To do that you need to shoot with both of them and make a final decision. Everything else you will hear here will be just more or less subjective votes from both Tamron and Sigma camps. :)

Tamron G2 is weather sealed , and Sigma not.

This is very important.

Have you considered the excellent Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II? It's pricier, but also crazy sharp, fast and accurate to focus...an outstanding birding lens for the Canon shooter. You could probably crop to match a 600mm angle of view without giving up much (if any) IQ to the consumer long telephotos. It might be worth renting this and the G2, work 'em out for the weekend and order the winner.

Important? Maybe, maybe not, it depends of a shooter, it is individual matter.

To me it is important, that's why I own Sigma 150-600 Sport, fully weather sealed.

But, some people avoid to "soak" their lens, be it weather sealed or not, shooting only when weather is decent, so it all depends. Beside, I do not know to what extent is G2 weather sealed. Any link with Tamron G2 gasket scheme available?

Here is Sigma Sport scheme.

You mean to say that deterioration of IQ with TC coupled to excelent Canon 100-400 IS II was so much pronounced? Was that original Canon TC 1.4?
I have the Canon 100-400 IS II and that lens is excellent but with a 1.4 TC is a great difference. I have tried before I bought the 5D mark IV the sigma C on this camera and I must say it was very good.

I have just got my Tamron Gen 2 after 2 years of very happy Gen 1 use. As I am recovering from major surgery, Sar (4MPX on this forum) is kindly testing it for me. Here is a D500 shot from yesterday afternoon with the Tamron GEN 2 + Tamron TC1.4N opened up 2/3 stop. Not too shabby for 25X hand held... cheers Andrew

Nicely done! One thing that has surprised me is how well it holds up with a 1.4x TC. I honestly was expecting mush, which has been my experience with most teleconverters I have used.

Thank you, Kris. Sar is an excellent shooter.

As for the Gen 2 + TC 1.4, I figured that Tamron wouldn't invest in a new line of TC's that only fit the Gen 2 without doing their homework...

Cheers, Andrew

Another shot from yesterday afternoon by Sar...

What I am very curious about is what Tamron is doing next. Why make new teleconverters that only work with one lens? I got the new 1.4x TC and it will not phsically mount on my Nikon 500 F4 or 300 F2.8, which I found pretty odd. I'm sure they will update the 70-200 VC next to the new SP line, but I wonder if they will be getting into bigger lenses?

Hi Kris

You pose a very interesting question... I suspect that Tamron will move towards higher value lenses as a necessity. After all, look at the flood of "low cost" new brands. Ideally, Tamron will release a premium "hero" lens or two in the near future. Sigma have announced their 500/4. How will Tamron respond? Fascinating times and aren't we spoilt for choice... Cheers, Andrew

Yes it is the Canon 1.4 tc III.
