I am really surprised by the negative posts I read here against Olympus re the pricing policy of the M1/2. Personally, I am not a Pro and would never buy the M1 either the mk1 or mk2 since I don't need their features. I also agree that the price is too high. BUT:

1) Its only the initial starting price. Eventually it will come down based on basic pricing trends of goods.

2) It follows the general trend we witness where camera manufacturers are increasing their prices. I guess this is mainly happening due to lower volume sales where they are trying to hold on their annual profit targets, but it may also be due to an increase of the costs derived again by the lower volume sales of the suppliers! The parts suppliers are also trying to hold on their profits! On the other hand It may also be an "unofficial" agreement of the industry to increase the prices again pushed by the global recession.

3) For professional work, I believe there are really equally good or better alternative solutions in DSLR and mirrorless APSC bodies. If someone has already invested in m43 lenses then there are also alternative good bodies close to MK2 performance.

4) If the sales of the MK2 reach their profit target (and not the volume), then Olympus will probably stick to this strategy for the coming years making their shareholders happier and happier.

Finally, no matter what Olympus decides or plans, no matter if we moan or not, the real judgement will eventually come from the market itself. Only we, the consumers will decide if the price of the Mk2 is the right one or not.

So simply put, only buy the mk2 at the price level you consider fair in order to pass the message to Olympus (and the rest of the manufactures...)!

Please Yannis this is not the time for rational thinking!!! It's mayhem time!!! Lock your doors and stay inside!! ;-)

I was interested in buying this camera at one time but when they couldn't figure out the price...I figured it would be higher than I was interested in going. Perfectly fine with me I can look at other options like you said.

I tried, but really can't do it!!! I really love all this mayhem and discussions about pricing strategy and marketing :-)

Is Obama to blame for this too?

But more seriously, its what the market will bear. Prices in all electronics seem to be going up hugely; a replacement MacBook Pro over my highly enhanced 2010 model is well over $3K and a similar Surface Book or whatever Micro$oft announced is over $4K.

You are correct...we need to blame someone!! He started it so lets go with him.

The price is an acceptable price for a new introduction to a TOTL camera from Olympus. Obviously as time passes the price will drop and in time stabilize to a more consumer friendly point.

Simple fact is that like the EM-1 was/is the EM-1II is a professional grade, updated camera body for Olympus users who desire that.

The people who complain about its pricing should compare its offerings to other brands choices and they will see it's a fair new camera starting point.

Of course as consumers we all want stuff we wish or can buy to be cheaper in price, but life is not always that way.

But I know with my 30+ years of shooting many of them as a working pro, I can take my EM-1 anywhere, shoot anything, any subject, at any time and be totally pleased with my results as any other brands higher to TOTL cameras can and I would feel even more so comfortable with an EM-1II, all while keep lots of money in my pocket. Even my EM-10II with using my skills can get me similar results with all be it a few limitations that it has due to its lower pricing and lesser features to over come or be aware of.

Will I buy an EM-1II? Not right now, maybe not at all. But if I do wind up fancying it, I will wait for time to pass and price drops. I do not need it today, my EM-1 is my GO TO camera and my EM-10II is my safety back up.

Thanks for the thoughts. I agree. If I wanted the camera, I would pay the price, even knowing it will go down later. For a couple of reasons, I don't plan to buy it, but I can't believe there are so many people on these threads worried about $100 (or whatever) here or there and badmouthing Olympus because they don't have the money to support their hobby. Do they need to find new jobs or new financial advisors? If you like your interest in photography, you need to spend the time and money. If not, find something else like collecting music boxes or trout fishing...

Ahead of you there, collecting equipment to eventually have a G gauge garden railway empire running. Makes camera prices look like chicken feed.

In fact we could use the E-M1ii as a price indicator.....
  • Currently rebuilding big decks at rear of house as a prelude to getting the yard ready for the trains, at Aussie prices cost maybe = 5.7 x E-M1ii
  • Train collection including track (the expensive part) maybe will end up at 7 x E-M1ii or way more if I get really keen.
All the while my E-P5 will keep working to record all the fun.

Regards..... Guy
