I know the specs are terrific (except no IS and x7 vs x10 IS on the Minolta A1) but the more I look at it the uglier it looks. The A1 on the other hand is some handsome camera and the more I look at it the more I like it.
Is the Sony that ugly or is it just me?

Nice specs though. Don't know if it will have a useable ISO above 100.

That "thing" is sure ugly. I really don't know why Minolta can make a small and nice 28-200mm lens, when Sony obviously can't? It looks like a toy gun...

The A1 is 7x zoom, just like the D7xx series. The Z1 is the 10x zoom model (no IS). And we don't really know how effective this new 'CCD movement' type of IS will be..

But you're right, the 728 is a bit ugly. But it's the images that count so we'll have to wait and see how it stacks up in reviews. At least Sony has come to their senses a bit by including a CF slot. They'll catch a lot of current CF users I'm sure, that they wouldn't get otherwise.

I don't recall seeing your picture recently so can't compare ;). Actually both the new Sony's look really odd. But it varies with the angles of the pictures and some don't look that bad. I hope it will grow on users but there were lots of comments against the 717, etc., because of it's appearance. Some photogrpahers decried it's popularity with non-photographers, electronics store consumers and just the fact that Sony wasn't a camera company.

Personally, if it takes good pictures, I don't care how it looks.

Okay, I wish I had a black tube on my S602 because the brushed aluminum looks out of place.

Talking about ugly, look at the Nikon 5000 & 5400 cameras. The 828 is a site for sore eyes compaired to them. I think the 828 is a better looking then the 717, which I do own by the way. It wouldn't bother me at all to carry the 828 around my neck, even though I might need to wear a back brace to help support it. Do I think it's ugly, no. The more I look at it, the better looking it gets.

What I find to be particularly ugly are those cheap looking silver "plastic cams".

It doesn't matter whether it's ugly or not, but it is totally impractical to transport and carry about while travelling or in large crowds, and where is there no crowds today.

Hariette,

You really don't like the looks? I think it is one very nice looking camera. I like the looks much better than the 707, or 717.

Plus you have so many ways you can dress it up....LOL The "Tiger" skin and the right purse and you can go anywhere....LOL

I always found the 7*7 cameras VERY ugly, unwieldy and impossible to hide. Not good if you like to do discrete shooting at parties, etc. I felt like I was walking around with a raygun. (I also got flamed frequently for saying so)......but the 828, being black (at least) looks a little better, but still very unbalanced or lopsided. I know there are some people who think it's great, and it is the image quality that matters, but.......it's nice to like the way your camera looks and feels, too.

The Minolta A1 is a 7x (28-200mm) lens, just like the Sony 828. The Sony lens is bigger because it is FASTER. Faster always means bigger.

I'm waiting for reviews on the production model, complete with sample photos. Then we'll see how the two cameras really perform.

Big, bad and impossible to parallel park :)

Not a thing of grace and beauty, but has butch appeal if you like that sort of thing.

A1 does look more like a coupe by comparison though....

I don't know about that. It looks like operation of the zoom ring is blocked by the flash housing. So instead of one smooth long zoom you will have little bitty incremental zooms, unless the flash is up. Here form interferes with function.

It seems to be to be a handsome camera, except for the large round cover for the pivot with the giant logo on it. Sort of like a hubcap.

I have to say that Sony doesn't need any Viagra but might need some muscle builder---hummm
