Been a pbase member for 2 ½ months, and never a problem. I became a paying member two days ago, and now, nothing. Pbase is down. Just get this. Message;

PBase will be back.
Currently having some problems with the database server.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Been down for a long time. Down last night, still down this morning. Images I already have in forums still post, but I can’t upload images I took yesterday. Doesn’t look like I’ll make a contest deadline. Grrrr

This is kind of unusual for pbase as far as I know. I've been a (paid) member for over a year and don't recall it being down this long. Must be having some serious problems.

If you need to get something posted for a contest let me know and I'll be glad to throw it up on some webspace for you temporarily.

Thanks for the offer. I’ve become so accustomed to using pbase, I never think about my own web space for uploading photos. I like the anonymity of pbase, and the ease of use. I have the capability of creating galleries from scratch on my own, and have some, but pbase is neat. Quick and easy to use, no hassle. If I need to, I’ll just use my own web space. I must be in a whining mood today. I didn’t post this last night. :)

So I can understand when things like this happen. The only thing I would do differently is update the message on the front page with more information. We typically do hourly updates with messages stating the ETA that we think it will take to restore services. Even when we miss our targets, the customers feel better because they feel like they're informed.

Basically it's like the difference between getting voice prompts when you call a business or a real person.

Other than that I have no problem with Pbase being down, things like that happen. I can't wait for it to be up because I took a very nice photo last night I'd love to share. :)

Best Regards,

David Anderson

How can you be anonymous when you have to pay them? They know who you are, I presume.

Pbase does, but people in the forums don't. Part of the reason I like it is because software that gets email addys from peoples posts and links won't get mine thru pbase. If I used my web space, my email address would be easily accessable, not that is isn't already, cause I admin a bunch of web pages, I just like to keep the exposure down, and pbase allows me to do that.

I agree. Stuff happens, and I'm not upset with pbase, I just felt like whining. I had 4 photos to upload last night. I'm getting ready to head out the door for the weekend, so it will be a while before I upload them. Oh well. "Life goes on, Braaaa, La la la la life goes on". Paul McCartney

I guess that level of anonymity is fine with you. I prefer that even the company does not. We would have anonymous credit cards already, if not for the blood-sucking legalized robbery system in this country, wanting to keep tabs on everybody and everybody's money. 1984 is here, boys, we are really a bunch of cowards not standing up to this tyranny.

Grow up - this is a photo forum not an avenue for your political raving.

I know it's a free offer but I was wondering how much money have you guys given to Pbase.

I believe I gave them $60 last year, so I wonder if it's time to give them some more for this year. I do have more than 1500 images posted with them.

Hmm. The biggest blackout to hit the US hit a little less than two days ago. The NY subway system only got working this morning. Coincidence?

Either that or your $60 put him over the top and allowed him to retire to Hawaii a rich man.

You take you pick.

I wonder where Pbase is physically located? I haven’t tried to look to see if they say on their site. It is now Sunday night, and still, nothing can be uploaded. Their data base is being repaired. Sounds like maybe someone at pbase did a boo boo.

B&H is back up tho.

They've been runing Pbase on the cheap. They encountered some Oracle database corruption, switched to a backup server, and then had to wait until Monday for Oracle supprt to perform a restore of the data.

The conclusion I've drawn is that they have no on-staff Oracle expertise, and instead have a service contract with Oracle that does not provde 24/7 support. Too much exposure, IMHO, for pay-site with so many users.

They say they're going to upgrade their hardware and service contract.

BTW, I'm an Oracle DBA and developer supporting a web site for ING (the financial services company).

This is not the place for such remarks. Please take your politically orinted diatribes to the open forum....or better yet to a news group.

Thank you,

Rich Gibson
Sounds like you work for Gray Davis.
