I had a problem with Windows 10 and called Microsoft tech. support. For $99.00 they would fix my Computer. After 3 calls and working with 3 different tecks. (12 hours on the phone), they had to unstill W10 and rebuild my Computer. Of course I lost all of the third party software. (ITunes won’t install).

Apple help (which was free) found that there is a hot key installation from Microsoft to fix this. But Microsoft wants another $99.00 to install this.

Microsoft told me the original charge would cover till my PC was working right.

I asked to talk to supervisor and was put on hold. Of course that cut me off.

Ok, enough venting. Does anyone know how I can get this fix without paying another $99.00?

Other than horribly infected systems, it is actually unusual for things to get so bad, it would require the nuclear option that MS support foisted on you. If you do not know how to troubleshoot problems a local repair facility might have been able to help you without wiping your drive. You may still want to consult someone local.

Itunes is very bad Windows software, there is no way around that. It insists on loading unnecessary components, you can change this, that slow start up and everyday computer use. There are better and free alternatives for media management in Windows. In OSX not so much, but Itunes is integrated into OSX rather than drilled into it like in Windows.

After many problems I personally do not use Itunes on any OS except to back up my iPhone and even then it is not very reliable and generates the same confusing warning boxes about backing up items as it always did. If you believe you are chained to iTunes because of DRMed purchased music even iTunes lets you create DRM free CDs, or at least it used to (I have not used Itunes in years except for phone related purposes). If you are chained to iTunes because of purchased video then rotsa ruck but going forward you need not continue that practice.

In any event a simple web search yields much useful information. For example

I've never had any issues with iTunes running on any Windows OS, starting with early versions of Windows 7. I'm currently running the current version (12.5.1) of iTunes on the latest version of Windows 10 Pro x64 (1607, non-insider ring) without issue.

I know a lot of people don't like iTunes, but lets not pass the FUD that it's a "very bad Windows software" because that's not true. It may be your opinion, but opinions are not facts.

Yes, there may be some that have issues, the OP, for example, but the issues are relatively low and can usually be attributed to something beyond iTunes' control. It also does NOT insist on loading "unnecessary components" (whatever those are) unless you tell it to. QuickTime for example.

Oh and please don't think I'm an iTunes "fanboy", because my actual everyday media player software is JRiver Media Center (paid program). I just used iTunes a lot before moving to JRiver. But, as stated, I still have iTunes installed.... and working.

As to the OP's issue, I have no idea what's going on and what MS did to their system, but iTunes is very much compatible with, and works on Windows 10 no issue.

My suggestions are to make sure you're downloading the correct version for your OS, i.e. 32 vs. 64 bit, and make sure you're getting it from Apple's website. Also make sure you have Administrative rights on your PC.

My two cents.

I've not idea what the "hot key" is but ok.

Good luck.

I suspect the OP meant "hotfix". MS produces hotfixes for specific issues that are not globally rolled out using Windows update. To get the hotfix you have to ask for it.

Probably. And yeah I know what hotfixes are. BTW most, if not all, usually get rolled up in their cumulative updates; the last one being released on the 14th of this month.

Anyway glad to hear OP got it sorted.

Peace:)

I'm with bmoag - iTunes is a bloated turkey and it went sour around the time Apple changed from being a simple administration tool for ipods and later other devices, and instead became a closed content delivery OS. It would be hard to know to blame Win 10 or them if there is a problem.

The fact that it's size is now hundreds of megs is really all the explanation needed.

OK. And opinions are still not fact.

Peace:)

So I decided to spend the money and called Microsoft help again,

This time I got India. The tech said there would NO charge and would call the next day at 9:00AM. He did. He did a complete uninstall Windows 10

and reinstall.

He did not know had caused the problem with the other installs.

But ITunes is working right again.
