I got my L plate on 10/14/16 by UPS. I ordered this on 08/26/16. This fits well and functions well. L shaped hex tool is stored within the base of the plate. This is an improvement over 5D Mk 3 L plate. Cheers!

Good to hear. Waiting for mine to arrive.

Nice, I ordered 9/20, hope it ships soon!

L plate is as the word says is shaped like L and is made of steel, aluminum etc. This is attached to the bottom of the camera and extends on to the one side,. You can change the horizontal to vertical position of the camera with this plate easily and almost in few seconds. It is considered useful accessory (almost a must if you ask me), when you are using a tripod. Most common manufacturer is Really Right Stuff company though many other companies makes it. Cost of the L plate for 5D Mk 4 by Really Right Stuff including shipping is around $200. If you don't use tripod you do not need this.

I replied to your question probably at wrong place. Just look for post just below this.

I buy plates now from Aliexpress. Very many types available, some of them unbelievable cheap. I selected brand Sunwayfoto, not the cheapest one, but still with much lower price than my old Kirk plates. And, believe me, same or even better quality compared to Kirk.

I do not know the RRS plates and never used one. 200$ is quite steep...

FYI an "L" plate in the UK is a sticker about 10x10 inches that learner drivers have to put on the back of their car when driving... so folks know it's someone who doesn't know what he's doing behind the wheel.

Which might be a good accessory for when someone buys a new camera anyways...

the Reallyrightstuff (RRS) L plate is designed to go with RRS ball-heads. I have not used L plates from other manufactures previously. I just looking at internet search, It appears that Sunwayfoto L plate is compatible with Arca and RRS systems. I did not know that before. So this look like an viable alternative. I plan to buy a cheaper plate for my 5D Mk 3 to use with the Manfrotto ball-head. I will look at Sunwayfoto option. Thanks for enlightening me with other options available. Cheers!

My RRS L Plate is still on order.

Of course my 5DIV is also on order as I ordered it as the kit w/ the 24-105II.

Wonder which one comes first (L plate or camera)??

A friend of mine has a SunwayFoto L bracket for his Nikon and it works fine on both my RRS BH 55 and Arca Swiss Z1. They are all Arca Swizz compatible. but the RRS lever release clamp is a little more picky about what kind of plate you can use,, not every AS compatible plate fit as well with that, original Arca Swiss plate for example doesn't work very well. but I have never seen one that doesn't work well with their screw-Knob plate, I have so many different plates from all kinds of different manufacture they all seems to work fine.

Oh, I assumed (well, decided to) that they were "learner" plates, intended for people who had bought a high-end camera as they thought it was the one they should get, but have no idea how to use it ;-)

(BTW I actually don't use L plates, just ordinary AS ones, but that's my usage model and other equipment rather than any judgement.)

Looked at the website. Cannot tell how the L plate accommodates the USB cord. Since Canon and LR haven't gotten their tethering together yet, it may not matter. But how do you flip the camera to vertical with the tethering cord attached? Is there room?

It does with slight modifications, I plan to take pictures and will upload to show how it is done. Cheers!

As you know, USB cable wire has to go through the clamp provided by Canon and the clamp screed securely to the camera. This clamps presents a challenge in mounting in on vertical portrait orientation.

Plate comes in the separate base plate and the L clamp. L hex tool goes in the base plate and secured there by a magnet. For normal use the L part is connected to the base plate by inserting the shiny metal screw through the 2nd hole (middle) from the bottom. For use of USB you have to use the first hole fro the bottom. This moves the L plate away from the camera giving you room to screw the clamp on to the camera with USB cable in place. Following pictures will show how it looks.

Note the connecting screw is in the first hole and thre ample room for the clamp and the USB cable.

The USB associated clamp and cable do fit securely but snuggly. So answer is this that USB cable can used for tethering while using RRS L plates. Hope it helps. cheers my friend.

Very Funny!!! I went to a beginner camera lecture 3 yrs. ago. The instructor quizzed, "how many of you have L plates" Only 2 hands went up out of 15 students. I went home thinking I have to join this elite group of 2. while ordering, I realized that you also need a certain type of tripod as well. That is how I acquired my L plates. In my case it was truly a 'Learner Plates'.

Very cute!!!. My fault I missed it earlier. You should read my reply to Dr-jon. In my case these may indeed have been learner plates.

This the cut and paste of reply I gave to Dr-Jon
