Hello Experts,
I'm trying to start using external flash (speedlights) with D3300. I'm writing down my learning from research today. Please correct me if I'm incorrect. My budget is around $100. So Nikon speedlights are out of questions. Assuming, you have only one external flash, there are two ways to use the external flash: On-Camera and Off-Camera.
On-Camera flash is very straightforward. Flash like Yongnuo YN-565EXN will talk to the camera and automatically modulate the power and trigger in Auto mode. Manual mode is also available. AF-Assist work much better in low light conditions compared to default d3300 AF assist.
Off-Camera flash needs helps with both trigger and exposure. Assuming, default flash as master, off-camera will be a slave (d3300 does not have commander mode). I don't believe d3300 has in IR transmitter, hence the only way to trigger the slave is using optical sync. I believe S2 slave mode in Yongnuo is smart enough to ignore the pre-fire pulse. To use it outside, RF based transreceivers are recommended for trigger. However, they are dumb and do not transmit TTL data. So the slave needs to be used in manual mode.
Ideally, I would like to have auto mode even in the slave mode and trigger under various conditions. Also, looks like d3300 does not support high speed sync. So makes no sense to buy more expensive flash lights. 565EXN has good GN number.
1) Do you think YN-565EXN should be a good start for me? I hope this is not a overkill.
2) Are there any other flash lights I should consider even if it means going over my budget? What would be their advantages.
Thank you all.
