Does anyone know if the apple iPod can work as a storage device for photos?

I guess the question should be can I hook up a card reader to it and download all my files to it?

I have a 512 card with the D100 and I want to shoot NEF but instead of buying more cards I would like to have a portable device to download my files to so I can keep shooting. I know that there are other divices but it would be nice to be able to play mp3s at the same time...A two in one device.

Thanks

No, it won't work for that. I wish it would, that would be great. But it doesn't have the ability to mount a volume (like a USB device).

I have seen similarly sized devices for offloading images (and even viewing them).

Not (yet) possible. Lots of requests asking Apple to make that possible in future. I'd buy one in a heartbeat! But recently I read a post of someone owning the new iMage Tank G2 and liked it. Has USB2 and comes in 20/40/60 GB HD flavors. I don't own one but here's one of several reviews:

Thanks Liem...I might end up going with the iMage Tank. I just wish there was a multi-use product that holds images along with viewing them, plays mp3's and the ability to hook up to anything.

Interested in $2K toys? I just bought the new ultra portable Sony VAIO TR1AP notebook for an upcoming far east trip. Only 3.1 lbs, built-in DVD/CD combo unit that also burns CD-ROMs (i.e. major reason for purchase), 900MHz Pentium-M (Centrino/wireless), long battery life. Really slick, and fits nicely in my camera bag. Chose it over the larger and heavier 12" Mac Powerbook. I use both Macs and PCs, so I'm not biased. I added a very compact ZIO! USB'2 CF card reader that plugs into the USB port w/out its optional cable (i.e. memory card slot only for Sony's own Memory Sticks, of course!). If you have a CF-PCMCIA card converter, that'll work too. -- Tao Liem

Take a look at this thread for more info. The short answer is: nope.

Subnotebooks rock! I'm envious of your new purchase. I'm saving my pennies for the new D2H, so I can't afford to buy one. But I came up with what I think is a pretty nice solution for my upcoming trip to Australia.

I didn't want to haul my full sized laptop around and I couldn't buy a new subnotebook. But from a previous job, I had an early model Sony Picturebook, a subnotebook that's about the size of a small organizer. The Picturebook didn't have nearly enough storage for the trip (only 8 GB), but it does have a firewire port. So I picked up a Nixvue Vista with a firewire adapter and use it as external storage.

The Vista lets me dump my CF cards in the field, which is handier than having to boot up a laptop each time I need to dump a card. When I have time in the evening, I can hook the Vista up to the Picturebook and look at my shots in Photoshop. The screen on the Picturebook is an odd size, so it's not something you'd want to use for extensive editing. But it's definitely good enough for basic stuff, and the screen is very bright and crisp.

The nice thing about this setup is that it's very compact and light, and it gives me both a way to do field dumps of CF cards and decent image editing. It also let me reuse some hardware, which is always good.

Subnotebooks are the way to go for travel.

The $499 Flashtrax will do this. Holds 30 gigs, has small lcd screen for previewing, can hook up to tv and do slide shows and will play MP3s. However the iPod is so much better than anything else on the market for playing music that you will want to own both anyway.

Thank Michael!!!

I like that Flashtrax...but what would make the iPod better? As long as they both play mp3s right?
It seems all I need is my Camera, compact flash card and headphones.

The iPod is about half the size of the FlashTrax, has a much better user interface, longer battery life and the ability to organize your songs in a much more complex manner. They are both excellent pieces of equipment, but the iPod is 100% designed to play and store music. The FlashTrax is designed to play and store images and has an MP3 player thrown in.

When I first got the iPod, the first thing I looked for was a way to store images on it. But after using it for a couple of months, I realized that it would have been a mistake to do so. I love being able to fill up the iPod with 1000s of songs and not having to worry about leaving space for image storage too. The iPod is just a beautifully designed and implemented device.

If you really want to do it up right and can afford two devices, the way to go is to get an iPod and a dedicated digital storage device. The Flashtrax is a little more expensive, primarily because of the ability to preview images on it's small LCD screen.

And to justify this thread in this forum, the FlashTrax does store and display NEF files.
