Any recommendations for a good small adapter that matches the size of the Super-Takumars? I have one adapter for Minolta MD but the MD base is a lot larger than necessary. I tried a cheapo Neweer but it was bigger than the MD. I'm guessing someone makes a reasonable quality smallish one?

Not sure what you mean about the size of the base.

The length of the adapter will be exactly what's needed to make up the difference between the 18mm E-mount registration (I'm guessing you're asking about E-mount, from your signature line) and the registration for which the lens was designed. The only way the length can be any different is if the adapter is a focal reducer. Focal reducers are a bit shorter than open tube adapters.

If you're talking about the diameter of the adapter... well, I have a Fotasy one that I bought from Rainbow Imaging. It's pretty nicely built, cheap, and a perfect match for the finish and diameter of the Zenit 44M-4 that's on it at the moment. It's 62.5mm in diameter at its widest point.

Kipon make a parallel sided adapter M42 to LM (orientation not adjustable) 49mm diameter.

Kiwifoto make a parallel sided adapter M42 to M4/3 (with adjustable orientation) at 54mm diameter.

Most are wider though. You will have to hunt around.

As SQLGuy said, most M42/NEX adapters will be in the same size range. The basic envelope is dictated by the function. Exceptions include focal reducers and the odd, flat M42/NEX ring that won't work as a focusing adapter but does allow the attachment of a bellows etc.

All that said here is the smallest M42/NEX adapter I have seen. It is basically a single piece of metal with no adjustment capability and no internal flange to activate the automatic aperture pin. Of course with Takumars that have an auto/man switch this doesn't matter.

The overall size of this adapter is very close to the overall size of a Super Takumar 3.5/35.

Steve,

That's exactly what I'm looking for, something the size of the Super Tak 35/3.5 for a nice tiny package. But what adapter are you referencing?!?!

Familiar with registration distance, I know M42 adapters can't be any shorter or it will just always focus past infinity.

Yes, this is what I was wondering, sorry should have been more clear. I checked and my Minolta adapter is 62mm and the Neweer is a touch wider, so 63mm or so. I'll have to check, but I think the Super Tak 35/3.5 is 50mm - 55mm wide, so it just looks silly. Maybe I'm dreaming but I'm hoping for a small, light adapter to go with it making a small, light package.

Yup, many of the M42 adapters have a larger diameter to accommodate a threaded insert (which can be rotationally adjusted). However, I've never seen a commercial one that was narrow enough to fit the Mamiya/Sekor M42 lenses that have the aperture ring extend back around the M42 flange. Here's my 3D-printed solution to that problem, mounted on a Mamiya/Sekor 135mm f/2.8:

BTW, that lens produces pretty low contrast, but has nice bokeh and a little bit of the medium format look (or am I imagining it?):

Interesting. I ended up machining a groove into the face of mine, so it would accept an Olympus M42 lens that has an extra pin the sticks out the back (a fixed pin, not the aperture stop down pin).
