Hi guys,

Can someone tell me what version number of camera RAW is needed for processing raw files on the D500?

Thanks in advance!

You have to rent Photoshop CC to be able to process the Nikon D500 Raw Nef files. I have Photoshop CS6 and the Nikon D500 camera. Photoshop CS6 will not process the D500 Raw Nef files and I will not rent Photoshop CC for the rest of my life.

My solution was to buy DxO Optics Pro 11 which processes the D500 Raw Nef files. You can do some processing in DxO (it is similar to Camera Raw) or not, then you export the Nef files as Dng files to Photoshop CS6 which opens these Dng files in Camera Raw CS6. It works great for me. I can now process the Dng files (which are really Nef files but converted to DNG with no lose) in Camera Raw and then pass the file to Photoshop CS6 for further processing.

For you, if you do not have Photoshop CS6 or earlier, You can just use DxO Optics Pro 11 for your processing.

I am glad you verified this. I have asked this question a couple times without getting the answer I was looking for. I downloaded the trial of DXO OP 11 and was able to export as DNG to my 5.7 version of Lightroom and wondered if that would work if I eventually purchased the D500. I am by no means an expert but did like the idea of using two different editing tools on the same raw file, especially prime noise ( yes a little slow but worth it to me) and some saying Optics Pro is one of the better raw converters. I also liked the idea of DXO doing its thing automatically then tweaking in Lightroom. Since I don't have the d500 yet I am waiting for Optics Pro 11 to go on sale...lol

Thanks for your reply Leon V!

I have PS CS6 in portable form with ACR 9.0, this handles the RAW files of my D750 and of course the older D7100. Since I am considering buying the D500 I have been concerned about Adobe's new system of renting, which also I have no intention of doing. I do nearly all my processing in RAW only and love it's flexibility using the adjustment brush while hardly ever using PS for processing. Does DXO Optics Pro 11 also have the same adjustment brush feature? This would be an essential feature for me!

Thanks again!

After downloading DXO Optics 11 Pro and being somewhat disappointed, I came across a n earlier post of yours where I understand that DXO can convert NEF RAW files into DNG RAW which can then be proccessed by PS CS6!

In Photoshop, the DNG files open up in Camera Raw for further processing before being pasted on to Photoshop. In fact, DxO Optics Pro will act as a plug-in in Lightroom; you can pass the D5oo files back and forth between Lightroom and DxO Optics Pro 11".

Like Bingo City...... and knock me down with a feather!

It works as well, looks like I'm going to be sucked in by a D500 after all!

Thanks Leon for that info, it's worth it's weight in gold!

Leon V, from today on, I am a fan of yours. I am an ameture hobbiest who needs to post process only occasionally. and I hate the idea of lifelong renting. I won't mind paying $500 for a perpetual license, but paying $10 per month for little to no use is a definite NO for me.

Few months back I bought Corel paintshop-pro ultimate, for 50 bucks that came bundled with few other freebees and AfterShot-2 (equivalent to LR). Good enough for my needs.

Question for all - I am not a pro nor am I out every day with my gear. I tend to spend lots of time with my camera during spring warbler migration and then some in the fall, and then a bit in the winter with birds, etc. Since I do not have a situation like a wedding photographer who may have many hundreds of images from a wedding many of which are in the same light and where having the speed of batch processing is useful. nor do I have deadlines that I have to meet for a publication, I don't understand why the Nikon Capture software get so little positive comment in this forum? Is it really THAT bad?? I know that Nikon had bought into Nik years ago and got the control points added to Capture, and then Google bought all of Nik, so things have changed, and Capture may not have been the fastest program in the world, but many folks felt it got the most out of NEF's. Jason O'Dell had a website built around using the Nikon software. What's the story on the latest version? If you are buying some other NEF converter, you are still spending money so why not purchase Nikon Capture? I'm still using my D300 so I don't have a NEF conversion problem now but I am looking forward to puchasing a D500 later this year and would like to hear what folks who already have the D500 think and what they are using. Thanks in advance for your input.

Like you, I too am an amatuer hobbyist and enjoy the occasional processing in Photoshop CS6. It started with the Nikon D100 and now the D500, a great camera.

I can't speak for others, but I have been using Photoshop, and then the Camera Raw plugin, for many years. When Nikon Capture NX2 appeared I couldn't get on with it. :-/ Photoshop and Camera Raw improved a lot over the years, whereas I don't think the Nikon software gained features, and then they changed the whole software with NX-D.

Yes. the Nikon software may be cheaper, but you can do so much more with Photoshop and/or Lightroom. The Nikon software may well be able to render the Nikon Raw files the best, but the Adobe Raw editing software has a lot more options and work well enough for me. You pays your money, you makes your choice. :-)

When I got the D500 I had to convert the Raw files to DNG files until I was able to upgrade my Adobe software to read the D500 files.
