You have to rent Photoshop CC to be able to process the Nikon D500 Raw Nef files. I have Photoshop CS6 and the Nikon D500 camera. Photoshop CS6 will not process the D500 Raw Nef files and I will not rent Photoshop CC for the rest of my life.
My solution was to buy DxO Optics Pro 11 which processes the D500 Raw Nef files. You can do some processing in DxO (it is similar to Camera Raw) or not, then you export the Nef files as Dng files to Photoshop CS6 which opens these Dng files in Camera Raw CS6. It works great for me. I can now process the Dng files (which are really Nef files but converted to DNG with no lose) in Camera Raw and then pass the file to Photoshop CS6 for further processing.
For you, if you do not have Photoshop CS6 or earlier, You can just use DxO Optics Pro 11 for your processing.

Thanks for your reply Leon V!
I have PS CS6 in portable form with ACR 9.0, this handles the RAW files of my D750 and of course the older D7100. Since I am considering buying the D500 I have been concerned about Adobe's new system of renting, which also I have no intention of doing. I do nearly all my processing in RAW only and love it's flexibility using the adjustment brush while hardly ever using PS for processing. Does DXO Optics Pro 11 also have the same adjustment brush feature? This would be an essential feature for me!
Thanks again!

After downloading DXO Optics 11 Pro and being somewhat disappointed, I came across a n earlier post of yours where I understand that DXO can convert NEF RAW files into DNG RAW which can then be proccessed by PS CS6!

In Photoshop, the DNG files open up in Camera Raw for further processing before being pasted on to Photoshop. In fact, DxO Optics Pro will act as a plug-in in Lightroom; you can pass the D5oo files back and forth between Lightroom and DxO Optics Pro 11".
