Just rented D500 from lensrentals for few days to see if I like it. My other Nikon is D750. D500 works seamlessly with my G lenses. However, when I mounted my 85 1.4 AF-D it does not want to recognize it, it just displays F7 and I can't change aperture and it won't AF. My lens is of course fixed all the way to the left at F16 and locked. I removed the lens and mounted it on my D750, which immediately recognized it and operates it with zero issues. Is there a setting in D500 menu that I am failing to select so camera recognize my AF-D lens?????

I don't know of any setting needed for that lens ... I have a 1986 AF nikkor 50mm 1.4 (first generation Nikon AF) and it has worked flawlessly on all my Nikon SLR and DSLR bodies including the D500. You might try a reset on the Camera. Certainly no problem your lens, so perhaps something wrong with the rental?

Did the AF switch on the front of the camera accidentally get bumped out of the AF position?

Just a longshot but try cleaning the contacts with an alcohol swab or something...

Works perfectly with my Tokina 11-16 screwdrive. So maybe try another D500 at the rental shop to see if it works with that.

Is your aperture ring on 85 set at maximum aperture and locked?

Of course its locked. Otherwise it would not be working on my d750, right?

It's gotta be the problem with the body as it works fine with my full frame body. It is just weird because typically it is a lens and not a body problem

Yeah but must be that specific sample as there are no problems with D500s in general.

Go to menu option F4, select "Aperture Setting", then select "Aperture Ring" and hit the OK button. Turn the aperture ring on the 85 1.4. Does it now work and change aperture in the top LCD?

Make sure it is completely seated. Try to turn it until it completely stops. Sometimes there is a little play which prevents lens from working.

Yes but from f7 to f6 to f5 ... f1. Going to non CPU menu and setting 85 1.4 as lens one makes it in a typical manual ai-s like lens. Sort of like when u attach a lens like 50 1.2 ais to the camera

Talk to Lenrentals.

You seem to be doing everything correctly.

F7 is not listed in the instruction book section on trouble shooting.

The D500 should work fine with your D lens, just like your D750.

If the camera body likely has a fault Lensrentals need to be told before you return it. When returned if Lensrentals confirm a camera fault they may well loan another D500 free of charge.

In which case everything points to an issue with the contacts for me, as others have already indicated.

It's indicating the relative aperture position to the maximum aperture available. I believe that F7 indicates 7 stops away, F6 indicates 6 stops away and so on...
