Greetings from Texas,

I tried a search and couldn't find anything on enlargement size and the SD-9.

So, what size can one enlarge to and still get an excellent image with the SD-9? At what enlargement size does the image start to turn soft? Are there any particular "problems" that I should look out for when going beyond 8"x10"?

Thanks,

Cliff.

Cliff,

It depends on the subject. If you're doing a lot of tight field of view shots (portraits, macro, standing close to the subject, etc.) you can enlarge to A3 and Super A3 without a problem. I tend to limit my landscapes to around 10x15 and have no problem going larger for other subjects.

If you have a good interpolation routine, you can always up-size to help get good large prints. The program 'DCE-Auto-enhance' has a 3rd-order Lanczos routine and it gives excellent results. There's a trial version you can download.

I have recently printed the cropped version of the frog picture

http://www.pbase.com/image/19346631

I printed this photo at super A3 size (13x19)
What I did is process the X3F file and outpu
a double size tiff file. I then cropped it as shown
in the linked picture so the image was basically
a 3.4 MP image after the crop. The quality
was quite good from my Epson 2200. I would give
it a 8 - 9 as far as sharpness goes.

This tells me that (depending on the image) you
can get very acceptable images at least to Super A3
size or more.

Jerry et al,

Great input. This is what I was hoping for. I'm about to make the move into digital and have been looking at all of the dSLRs - coming to the conclusion that the SD-9 is the way to go.

Thanks,

Cliff.

Apparently others are interested in what print size you can get from
the bayer 6+MP cameras:

I was surprised that, in this opinion anyway, 11x14 was
the largest acceptable print size. Must be the
bayer limitations.

Jerry,

Yeah, I was somewhat familiar with the "limitations" of the bayer sensor in 6 MP cameras which is why as a relative newcomer to this forum I was interested in what the SD-9 could do. The answer is obviously "more".

I've seen some posts on other forums where poster size images have been made by some with the bayer 6 MP sensor cameras and labeled "acceptable". The only problem that I have with that is, "What is "acceptable?". I've seen some 11x14's that really weren't all that great, IMO. In fact, 8x10 was probably about as far as I would have been willing to push their results and call them "acceptable". So I'm tickled that we can go larger with the SD-9.

I've printed several really nice 11x14's with my S602 in 3.1MP mode, so I think thats a bit exaggerated.

I also recently printed a fantastic 8x10 portrait from my SD-9 that was a 1096 x 1176 crop (1.3MP) from a high res image. This camera continues to amaze me.

Hi All,

Have shot on High resolution. Converted to 16bit Tiff (approx. 20MB). Gave it to the local Pro printer. They printed it through the Pegasus machine at 20X30 inch. EXCELLENT RESULTS. Everything was sharp.

The printer can only do 12x18 or 12xroll and the SD9 has gone up to 30x40 in professional printing that I have done, and even landscapes at 20x30. The 30x40 was of an image (my daughter and a baby goat) about 8 feet away with either the 50 or 105. I can't tell you how super it looks. The 20x30 landscape look exteremely good also. If you are a good photographer, you will be ecstatic. In our small town, about 6 people I know have the 2200. I have the 1270 so I can't justify upgrading although I have thought about it for panoramics, and may do so.

The Epson 2200 is a tremendous printer well matched to the SD9.

Hman72,

Just made my day, you did. I couldn't ask for much more. I wasn't expecting to be able to go this large, but it is nice to know that it is there, and how it was done.

Thanks,
