It's the Contax 50mm f/1.7

I think this may end up being my favorite 50mm. It's warm like the Konica, and warmer than my Canon, Minolta, and Leica - and it is sharp. Easy to focus. In these test shots it even displays a certain amount of pop - YES !!!

Lenses ? - I do have a few - and I few I don't know I have as well :)

The Contax Zeiss C/Y Planar 50/1.7 is being known as the "Nifty-Fifty" with the most 3D Pop, typical Zeiss Look from the C/Y Line...there are dozens of theads about this lens. I have mine since the past...hum, 15 years or even more...sweet cat. :-)

The image data on your pictures say the lens is 28mm????????

Yes, i've seen it too...but this might be his C/Y to Fuji X-Mount Adapter (fixed EXIF fake info - like all these cheap M42-EF or C/Y to EF Canon Adapters with AF Confirm Chip & 50/1.4 hardcoded EXIF tags.

Encouraging words about the lens.

Since your an old hand at owning this lens, do you have any recommendation as to any other Contax lenses to consider ?

I have the 28mm 2.8 and that gives me the FF aspect of a 42mm on my APS-C camera.

This 50mm 1.7 gives me a much need 75mm FF field of view. Easy to hold.

Yes - it's a pain on the PRO 1.

I was looking for an EXIF editor so I could enter the correct data on the images. The only one I have found is a bit of a pain and cumbersome to implement.

I can change the lens focal length in the camera every time a mount a MF lens, but in bright daylight that is a pain. I have resorted just creating a folders on my computer with the name of the lens. Of course the aperture info relies on my memory (approximate) or I can write it down.

Solutions are few. Keep in mind I do this for fun. It's a hobby I prefer to enjoy as opposed to getting carried away with keeping records..

I'm open to suggestions.

Absolutely correct about the EXIF data. Don't think there are any smart adapters for the FUJI system - are there ?

Just right - the 50/1.7 C/Y Planar does have a ~75 FF-equal focal length - very nice for shooting portraits on a APS-C camera.

Good Light !

Hmmm ... you do have a few lenses.

Good list. I have a bunch of those including the Contax 28mm 2.8.

My next lens I'd like to get is the Contax 35mm 2.8 and you have that. That's good.

How do you feel about the Contax 50mm 1.4 vs the 50mm 1.7 ?? Significant differences ? It's another tempting lens.

You could try LensTagger, which can be added as a plug-in in several applications, such as Lightroom. It is based on ExifTool, and operates in a Windows GUI.

I have read review, but when I get a chance to ask an owner like yourself - I ask. Appreciate the feedback.

By the way, you don't happen to know the area between Neumunster and Bad Bramsted ? It's up north of Hamburg.

LensTagger seems OK, but when trying to install ExifTool, my security software removes the product. Unfortunately I am pretty tight on security.

35/2.8 is great, good pop and sharpness wide open. Busy bokeh though.

No, i was never being close to Hamburg, but i do know a bit from bavaria, east & north sea here (Timmendorfer Strand, Scharbeutz), and rhein main area & ruhrpott. :-) I've been in Münster, Xanten, and some other cities here...

Just curious. I lived up northern tip of Germany many years ago.

Not a fan of the rings standing out. Prefer whole disk being fuzzy in the bokeh.

I didn't own both at the same time, but I think the 50/1.4 has smoother bokeh, though you do still have a bit of business and outlining. I've posted a couple other times in this forum with some samples. The 50/1.7 has worse outlining, but is cleaner wide open. One stop down unfortunately skips f/2 and goes right to f/2.8
It is nice that it has an f/2 setting though.

Don't know if I can afford a lens in this category that isn't busy. From what I have seen they tend to get more expensive. I think the Contax 35mm 1.4 falls in that category, but maybe I should save up for it though. More glass and you get more weight. Wish the FUJI had IBIS so I could handle that better. It get complicated.
Yes, they do get very pricey. I sold my 35/2.8 when I tested against the 35-70 f/3.4. Performance was very close, and CV 40/1.4 was smoother at f/2.8 so I sold the C/Y. I do miss it though. It had a very nice drawing style. The 35/1.4 is supposed to be known for its bokeh and its POP. I also need to save for some time before I can buy it, but I always talk myself into less expensive lenses I want to try and my savings never gets there...

Any idea how the CV 40/1.4 compares to the Leica 40/1.4 ? I happen to have that lens - it came with a Leica CL I bought at a second hand store long time ago.

I have to keep reminding myself - maybe my solution is to just use that lens. I'm just not a big fan of those small Leica lens focusing rings. Awkward focusing.
