Ok this was my first shoot with strobes. I have about 13 years of experience using hotlights for video but never used strobes. These were taken fairly rushed so I am sure I missed some of basics like hairlights etc. (not always a big fan of them myself.) Given more time and less confusion I could have taken more care for the lighting but I think they turned out fairly well. Its pretty tough working with 9 girls at once.

So you're the guy that I had to shell out my hard earned $30 for assembly processed high-school pics.

hi mark,
what lights are you using?
am i mistaking in saying you post at Zuga as well?

i don't see any blown highlights, and i never understood why people throw "composistion" in the ring for every picture they look at.

sure, composistion is important, but it's not required for each and every pic, therefore, if you captured what all the girls wanted you to, then i like the shot.

BTW, what blown highlights?

Naw, I don't post at Zuga must be someone else. If I did it would have been a long time ago. Do you hang at the digital wedding forum? That would be where I do most of my posting. Yeah the girls were happy, I was trying to capture some fun moments more so than the pose. Formal stuff can get so boring sometimes. I wasn't paid for this one did it just for the practice and the girls had a blast doing the shoot.

I used Alien Bee 800's. I have a set of 4 along with some random accessories.

Thanks for some useful feedback. :-)

that's where i've seen your posts.

i think in the same lines as you..........this hobby is suppose to be fun, and that's how you get good at it.............because you want to.

i plan on doing some stuff with our kids and i'm sure not going to expect them to sit and pose forever...........

maybe later with my 8 yr old grandaughter.........she's a picture buff and she'll love participating in a studio session or 2 or .........LOL

Hi Mark,

I think that's a really smashing picture! All those happy expressions made me smile with pleasure. And they all look so glowingly healthy, as well. Thanks.

I've saved it into my folder of "other people's pix that I want to look at again", if that's OK with you?

Doesn't need a hairlight. Nothing burned out on my monitor, either.

Might look a bit cleaner with more light in the lower background, not to remove the shadows, just ease them a bit. You could do that in Photoshop, if you wanted.

Thanks for letting us see it.

Love the shot and other pics on your sight. Just what the kids like.

Just curious as I think throwing a bunch of colors into this picture would add even more fun and character to it. But I love all the expressions, like that other person said it put a smile on my face. Speaking of those expressions, did you have each of those girls hold a specific expression and pose for the shot or was it more fluid?

The shot was fluid. I was talking to them and striking my own poses to get them going. It was fun. I chose B&W because I like it :-) and if you look at the full page you will see I did them both ways. Wanted to give them all the option if they wanted. Having that many kids they really play off of each other.

NIce fun looking shot. Im sure the girls had fun too.
I may have even curved it up a bit,
Blown Highlights??????

As for the poses, like I tell my wife, sure get the perfect poses, but the great shots are the ones where they are just enjoying themselves.

Blown Highlights??

Check your monitor ksocool.

FOR the white background shots.... the background lights were near full power and the fill and main where a stop apart somewhere near 50% power

(2) AB 800's in brollies to light the background
(1) AB 800 in a photoflex 5ft octobox on the camera left as the main
(1) AB 800 in a photoflex 36x48 silverdome softbox for some fill on the right

For the black shots.... I turned the background lights down to about 25% power maybe a bit more and turned the fill and main up to about 75%

(1) AB 800 in a photoflex 5ft octobox on the camera left as the main
(1) AB 800 in a photoflex 35x48 silverdome softbox for some fill on the right

(2) AB 800's with snap in grids to control spill onto background for some edge/backlight

For the brick background shots I used...

(1) AB 800 on a boom in the photoflex silverdome

Mark... I like this senior photo and was surprised that the first person to respond was so negative. You got a cute shot, the girls obviously had fun, and you indicate they were very happy with the results. It's a very cute image of which you should be proud.

Can someone tell me where to find the "Digital Wedding Forum" that is mentioned in several of the responses?

You say that working with 9 (cute) girls is tough? Hmmmm, I can think of a lot of worse shoots to be on.
Keep up the good work, Mark.
............Zipppppppppppppy

mark,

thanks for the reply... do you think the photoflex 5ft octodome with a 48" umbrella as fill will be sufficient for say a couples shot full body? or half body?

I am thinking about getting the 5ft octodome and wanted some opinion on how useful it is if its much better then the 48" umbrella I have..
