The D500 continues to amaze me. I caught 5 seconds in the life of an Osprey this morning. Starting with the dive, coming out of the water headed to my right and then turning straight towards me. There is no other camera I would rather have in my hand for what I shoot. Here are a few of the series. Oh, the three it missed were when I lost it in the frame during the dive and the 2 when the Osprey was in the water...

Group AF

I was actually trying "release and focus" since someone asked a few days ago about it. Seems to work pretty well.

A3 set to default 3 and middle

Full manual

AWB

Maybe some other cameras offer better IQ, but they would not have had as many keepers....

Kris , excelent shots, superb, thanks.

Maybe D500 with 24 megapixel would be better IQ...................maybe next D7300 .

Regards, Valeriu

Nice shots! I'm guessing your using xqd..to get that far.. what lense?

That is an excellent series, as you know.

As for IQ, first I think that the d500 is about as good as DX gets. Second, you have to capture the image you want, before IQ even comes into play. I see nothing wrong with the IQ of these shots and I certainly wish that they had come out of my camera. :-)

Ironically I forgot to put my XQD in this morning so it was my SanDisk 95 mb/s card. I think I took about 12 shots of the Osprey dive. Once they hit the water, there is a few seconds which let the buffer clear. As soon as the Osprey came out of the water I was back on it.. 500 F4 VR-G ...

They are all cropped about 50% before resizing to 1600px wide.

The D7300 will not be able to touch the D500 in speed and buffer. I would be surprised if they put the d500 AF system in it.. I will take 21 MP/10 FPS over 24/8 and day of the week...

Thanks Kerry! Have no fear, my comments were surely in jest of the recent threads that have been plaguing this forum lately.
Well, I'd suggest that the recent threads bashing the d500 are in the past and won't be happening again anytime soon. :-)
The D500 is the best camera on the market for focal length limited action photgraphy. I couldn't believe when I opened LR and started reviewing the series that they were all in focus.. Not a single drift off the subject..
Of course, I agree that the d500 is the best DX camera for action shooting. I too, have been amazed at how the d500 just grabs and hangs on to the subject, with excellent focus. I wish that they'd done this a few years ago, when the d400 was actually expected. Until the d500, I've never had a series of several images, where all were in focus as if they were static subjects. The AF is simply incredible to me.

Very nice set. You have a fine spot for shooting.

You know that at some point in time though, that this is going to become mundane and boring. I said about my D4 that if the AF ever got better it would take some of the challenge out of BIF.

As I said in another thread, I typically have my bodies set to release + focus. I think it takes your mind of the initial focus acquisition and gets it on the tracking. Or maybe not.

Dropping down from XQD speed to 95 mb/s can be a drag, and usually rears it head on buffer at the worst times. I'd run into the same thing with the D810 dropping from 160 mb/s CF to 95 mb/s SD

Superb series Kris.

I agree the AF on this camera is as good as it gets for birds in flight in the DX world.

well its a great camera still that does not mean people can have different opinions for whatever reason , no camera is perfect so lt depends on skills and intended usage if a camera is the best tool for the moment.

You have presented a great serie and it's clear your skills combined with an very nice camera is an great combination.

I am always impressed by your talent and ability to capture such breathtaking, awe-inspiring images and am mesmerized looking at them.

Your talent with a camera is unquestionably the primary element of your fabulous photography. The close secondary element is the wildlife itself along with your knowledge of when and where these magnificent creatures will present themselves in such a fashion as to make it possible for you to capture those five remarkable seconds. The third and fourth elements are your masterful skill in use of the D500 + lens. Finally the fifth element, without which the above four elements cannot thrive is just being there!

You are not only blessed with the talent, skill and equipment, but with location as well. If you meant to do it, or if it just happened is unknown to me. Nevertheless you are in a place where there is abundant opportunity, and I suspect much of it is conveniently accessible.

Can you tell us (me) exactly where you made these captures? I am going to be in Westbrook at Waters Edge Resort for a few days in early October for a family wedding and am hoping to be able to bring my combo and get out early at least one morning ... hopefully a nearby location. Plans may include going further up the coast as well after the wedding. Any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Amazing series, Kris. Very happy that you are pleased with your purchase. Nice to have all the doubts, second thoughts, returns, et al in the past. Now you can focus on what is important to you and deliver some excellent sushi in the process.

Kris, I've been chasing Osprey for years locally and mostly in Florida and any one of these surpasses anything I've come up with so far. I'm just amazed that you can consistently come away with these results. Really nice !

I am still just as excited today as I was five years ago when I catch relatively close raptor action. This series actually generated a fist pump from me for only the 2nd time this year.

The biggest reason I go out every day is my own sobriety and to figure out how to out-do what I have already achieved. Another reason is I feel much of the wildlife is in serious danger of extinction and I want to document as much of it as I can for future generations. Thirdly I also corespond with several biologists about the breeding Osprey in CT and especially of late post fledge survival.

So more me it will never become mundane, for others viewing my Osprey images, it may. Luckily for them the season only lasts half the year and then I'm on to hawks and harriers :)

Amazing Kris,

Sharpness, clarity are superb and all that time you and the subject were moving!

Dave

Very well done! That convinces me I need to get a D500 - I just have to decide what to sell to finance it!

regards

Frank

Hi Kris:

Stunning flight series as always.

Regarding people knocking the D500 in this forum lately (I read the ridiculous original post and the entire tortured thread)..., you simply can't take seriously anyone trashing a camera who doesn't even own it or hasn't at least borrowed or rented it.... don't waste your time, they're just trying to yank your chain.

Best regards,
Rudy
