SAR just announced a new firmware for the 50/1.8, but it looks like it's only on Sony Japan. Any readers out there have a chance to try it?

I ran the Japanese version linked on SAR on my Mac and a7r. Everything went smoothly, although I don't notice any difference as of yet.

That link is incorrect for the FE 50mm 1.8, it is for the APS-C E 50mm 1.8.

Probably right, looks like they have an F at the end of the full frame version. Here's the Sony Japan link:

Yea, I'll look forward to more reviews. Feedback ranges from similar to slightly better to "still slow but much much better".

Just tried one out at Best Buy and picked it up (they're discounted down to $199 now and I got an open box one for $157 before tax).
Was pleasantly surprised by sharpness and bokeh wide open. Super light, cheap and small. And the AF is totally acceptable in terms of both speed and noise. I don't use 50mm much but it's nice to have it in my bag for when I do, and I'll feel less bad about having it but not using it versus with the amazing 55mm f1.8 zeiss.

I didn't have a chance to try it but knew it's IQ was generally impressive. When I saw the note about an AF upgrade I checked and found on too on eBay. Seemed cheaper than used copies since everyone selling them paid 249. Looking forward to trying it.
Also realized I've left my (A7II) firmware at 2.0, since the upgrades didn't effect me much. I wonder if that'll have a positive impact on focus given all the stop down focusing found on 3.0 and 3.1.

I installed V2 firmware update from the Japan site. It installed with no problems. The instructions were in English easy to follow. Its seems to have improved the focus speed a bit and it locks on a bit better with my A7s ii in video and stills mode. I find the FE 50/18 to be a nice small and light alternative to my Sigma A 50mm 1.4 and Sony FE 55/18

How did you get instructions in English from the Japan site? When I clicked on the link it was all in Japanese.

wait a sec. when could you ever upgrade firmware on sony lenses? i know you can on sigma lenses using the dock but sony?
