On Sunday I went to the Canadian International Air Show at the edge of Lake Ontario and took along my SL1000 (the forerunner of the S1). For this type of usage, this camera (and other super-zooms) really demonstrate their worth. The 50X zoom (830mm equiv) and continuous mode allowed me to catch some pretty good shots hand-held. I would have needed a big heavy lens on a DSLR or my X-Pro1 and I think it would have been pretty challenging to do it hand-held. You give up a bit on the IQ but the compromise is worth it.

A few sample shots:

Snowbirds 1

Snowbirds 2

Snowbirds3

They can control when to turn the 'smoke' on and they use it for dramatic effect so they don't all use it all of the time. In pic #3 they all have it on except for the two at the bottom who are actually going in the opposite direction.

Nicely done with the SL1000. That is one of Fuji's best/better small sensor, big zoom cams.

The SL1000 and the S1 are very similar but not exactly the same. You can see the comparison of the specs here . The S1 has the weather proofing and wireless. A few of the specs are slightly different.

Thanks! They are more different than I thought they were.
