I'm looking for a middling priced Fuji for by brother. If I had my choice it would be the X100t but that is out of range for now.

I'm considering the X20 if I can find one in great shape.

Must have an optical viewfinder.

Any comments on the X20 or does it have too many failings?

I think you are on the wrong forum, but get the x20, great camera.

I wouldn't get it for the optical viewfinder which is of limited use on the X20. The X30 is a much better camera with numerous improvements on the X20, and its EVF is very good.

»Must have an optical viewfinder.«…

I agree, but I think that X30 is not much better camera, better only in certain parameters: additional front ring, 100% EVF coverage, better batery capacity, higher resolution LCD screen,.. His decision....

X20 is an exceptional camera with a slightly smaller body, more retro-designed, VF is a hybrid - with an optical hologram, it has exactly the same excellent zoom lens and IQ (the most important), relatively cheap ...

I have it (more than three years) and only the best of it. Without any problems.

You would be better off asking in this forum.

after having said that. i have one for about a year purchased it used on ebay for $190. if you go for one i wouldn't spend more that $225.It's a great little camera , as other have said not good in low light or for action. but other wise great camera .

Hi, great question. Let me add my two pence worth as someone who had a X20 and now has a X30. Overall, both are great cameras if the user wants a view finder, some control over exposure and a smallish, light body with great image quality (for the sensor size).

As far as I know both have the same lens and sensor so apart from a few JPEG tweaks the image quality will be the same.

The EVF, in my opinion, is far better than the OVF. As a long standing OVF user I was sceptical about EVFs, but the current generation (I also have a XT10) is now of sufficient capability to be very useful. Not least is the ability to see the effect of any exposure and film simulation adjustment in real time before one takes the picture. Furthermore, I always use a lens hood and the one designed for the X20/X30 intrudes into the optical field of view a little; no such issue with the EVF.

The body of the X30 is marginally bigger on paper than that of the X20, but in practice I find a negligible difference. I found the battery duration of the X20 insufficient for a medium shooting day so always used two batteries. With X30 I have found the battery able to cover a medium shooting day (but I always carry a spare).

For me, given the same image quality, I would balance the advantages of EVF and battery versus cost. I am very pleased with the X30, which I use mainly for hiking and family events. Interestingly, I have only recently bought mine (in August). I could not find a new one in a UK seller, but there are some new ones in Japan at very high prices as the stock dwindles. I was very lucky to find a mint used one. They are obviously still popular cameras, which does not surprise me.

Hope that helps.

I'm an idiot! An EVF will be fine, no need for an OVF.

He loves the ergonomics of my X-pro2 but it's a bit overkill for him and too much $.

Any suggestions?

If an EVF is fine then I'd really go for the X30 - at least in the UK it's now being sold at very low prices to get rid of old stock now, and it's a lovely camera.

Get it! It's a fine camera with an optical viewfinder that is totally underrated. The last mini Leica. I will keep it forever.
