Good afternoon from the UK. Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes. Plonked an SD card in the Canon 5D MK 3. Formatted it and took photos, so far so good. After a while the card showed up error 2. I replaced the card and carried on. Got home and the card is unreadable. I've downloaded a couple of recovery programmes but since the card is unreadable they won't even recognise it. Typically it's my little grandson's first birthday. I would be grateful for some advice in what to do. It's a Sandisk card, this is the third I've had go wrong over five years. I stopped buying them, now I will stop using them as well.

Unusual for a Sandisk card, are you sure they are genuine?

I would suggest trying the Sandisk recovery programme and letting them know of the problems you have had.

Does your 5d allow recording to both cards to avoid similar problems in future?

Just like any electronic item, cards do fail. There have been lots of discussions about image recovery from cards on these forums and you can do a search.

I know it doesn't help you now but, if you have previously experienced card failures, you are fortunate to have two card slots (SD and CF) in your camera and, particularly for precious photos, you could have duplicated the images to both cards.

My experience with Sandisk is the opposite of yours. No failures at all. I only use their cards. As I remember they supply a recovery program (or at least you can download one when you buy a card). I assume you have already tried their program.

I have tried the recovery programme from Sandisk but to no avail. I do have two slots but will need to buy a CF card, too late for this time obviously.

The best cards I've used have been the Delkin ones, never a problem and I have eight of them. The Sandisk were genuine, London Camera Exchange amongst others. How would you tell a non-genuine one? They've all come in Sandisk enclosures and they all difficult to get out!

I have done a search but always come up against the same problem, if it's unreadable on the MAC then it's not recognised as a card and that's as far as I can get.

I did have a brainwave and tried reformatting the card in the camera, however It's still saying the card cannot be accessed. Please note that the camera is NOT showing an error, just that the card in slot 2 cannot be accessed. Sorry for the duff info.

Knock offs can look very similar, but if you have bought from a reputable source they are very probably genuine.

This is an obvious suggestion so I am sure that you have tried it but did you try reading the card w a good card reader plugged directly into your computer.

That's the opposite of my experience. I use nothing but SanDisk & Lexar these days, but in the earlier days of my DSLR use I had a Transcend CF card fail. that was nearly 15 years ago, haven't had a failure since of any sort.

The same happened to me after I dropped a card onto my tiled floor. I discovered that the little lock/unlock slider on the side of the card had popped out and disappeared. I pulled one (with difficulty) from a spare small capacity card and put it into the damaged card. Immediately all was well and the card was readable and usable again.

Sounds crazy, hope this might help.

Doesn't sound crazy at all, but no, it was locked when I went to use it, I unlocked it and reformatted in camera. Many thanks for the suggestion though, one for the back of the head in future!
