photo phones are going to out sell digital cameras?

Makes sense to me, cheap camera sensors in every phone will of course outsell digital cameras, not everyone needs a camera, but everyone needs a phone. (okay not everyone, but almost everyone). So yes phones with cameras should outsell digital cameras at some point, especially since they will compete with the point and shoot crowd.

Everyone eventually wants to get to the day **** Tracy wrist watch is reality.

Quality is in the setup, Quantity ensures one good shot.

Wouldn't surprise me. I got a "free" camera attachment for my T68i. The picture quality is abysmal, obviously, so I have never actually used it.

I guess when they hit 2MP with a decent noise level, this will kill the market for ultra-compact cameras like the Optio S.

....if talking AND taking pictures while you're driving
is considered to be dangerous?!

it will be because of the market demand for phones. The phone manufacturers will however be forced by the "me too" logic that has driven high technology manufacturers to add a whole host of marginally costed "standard items" that never get used - just look at the functionality in common software products 95% of which are unused by 95% of the users - same situation in both audio and TV fields - it's already with us in mobile phones, what proportion use text messaging? - computer hardware bits and peices? - the list runs on forever.

Shortly most phones will have cameras in them and yes their numbers will absolutely swamp dedicated camera numbers - how many pixs will be taken via phones is quite another matter.

AND the whole issue is quite irrelevant to the much smaller market for more serious photography that is represented in these forums

Well -- I bought a Sanyo SCP-8100 (very small, "pocketable" camera phone) from Sprint.

However, I did not buy it for the camera (it's pretty bad, at only 352 x 288 pixels resolution).

Instead, I bought it because it has the best reception of any tri-mode (800mhz cdma, 1900mhz cdma, 800mhz analog) phone offered by Sprint (compatible with Vision - Sprint's Internet Service for your phone). I wanted a good quality tri-mode phone, for roaming to other carriers networks, when in areas where Sprint does not have coverage.

So, yes, perhaps photo phones may outsell digital cameras (although the quality of the photos is terrible). I've got a feeling that the low resolution of the phone, has more to do with bandwidth concerns from the Wireless Companies, than it has to do with cost of manufacturer. Bear in mind, that higher resolution camera phones would use more bandwidth on Sprint's wireless network. Since Sprint offers plans with unlimited Vision (like mine), I think they want to keep the resolution low on purpose -- to keep down their cost when users send/receive photos.

The camera in the phone is very bad, so I bought a Konica KD-510z (a.k.a. Minolta DiMAGE G500 -- the world's smallest 5 Megapixel Camera with a 3x Optical Zoom), so that I have a camera that I can carry with me everywhere (I carry mine in my front pants pocket).

Some photos from my Konica are here;

If you are interested in an image quality comparison of cell phones with 1MP cameras. Here is the link:

Not half bad - for a phone.

mmmm

The bright side is you will have your camera handy to take photos of the car accident you caused while talking on your phone :)
