Those are insects. I was in doubt if i should remove them.
 
Oh ok, I didn't realise. Personally I'd say remove them as it's not clear what they are, and they do distract a little from the quite frankly, amazing photo!

Lit with a RayFlash ringflash adapter (actually a light guide). This makes the image almost flat, with little depth. Coloured gel on the background.

I thought about that, but despite of the post i tried to keep the original atmosphere. I hope I said that right.
