getting frustrated with "soft" images (717)

The 717 just lacks a sharpness.. The Olympus is kind of a bad example because the Olympus is so darned noisey. But you hit the nail on the head. The 707 could handle this fine.

I have the same problem.

Ok. I have tried just about everything, yet cannot get the same
sharpness that I achieved with my F707. Even with UM the images
don't pop like my 707 did right out of the camera! What camera on
the market gives the best out of the camera pictures that don't
need a lot of post-work. I've looked at the Fuji S2, but with the
8X8 on the horizon should I just wait?

I typically shoot in manual mode, tried center and multi-focus, iso
100, 0 sharpening, 1 sharpening, fine mode, best resilution.

Thanks.

Well most of my pictures are of family doing things. It is grab the picture and take picture while I can.
If you are using flash, that helps automaticallly.
digital-freak,

Now you are starting to see one of my biggest issues. a VERY
shallow DOF. I am using Manual mode only. Hate to be a pain, but
can the DOF be increased without making the shutter too slow for
hand held photographs?

I know that Olympus is noisey .

I did not look to see how 707 handels this i will go to see that, in this case i was wondering that maybee the firmware from 707 could bee used or a new firmware for 717 if it is available.

I know the feeling, but even after I shot my S2 for 6 months I was still looking for sharper images. I guess I looked at too many SD9 photos. The bottom line is if you interpolate the bayer pattern, reduce noise and shoot through a AA filter, digital photos will be slightly fuzzy. Download one of Phils 1DS portrait photo and look at a hair. Its about 3 pixel wide. Now do the same with one of Phils 717 portraits. It is also about 3 pixels wide. It just that the pixels of the 1DS are so much finer, it is sharper than the SD9. The only camera that can capture true single pixel detail is the SD9, but it has a lot of problems. My 717 is also a bit soft, but shooting it side by side against my 10D it almost carries as much detail.

The 828 should be a super camera, I am sure.

Check out this thread. I think you started it.

So, pretty much everything you're shooting tends to have low contrast and no pop to it?

Hi Nukester,

I followed this link, and in my opinion, yes, the Olympus pictures are sharper, but I think they look way oversharpened compared to the 717. Out of curiosity, looked up Phil's review of the 707 and looked at the same studio shots. I think the 707 shots look almost as soft as the 717, just a little more saturated and maybe just a tiny little bit sharper. Certainly not enough to say that the 707 produces much sharper pics. For all I know the difference could be a slight difference in the focus point between cameras.

Personally, while I think my 717 is a little soft, I always sharpen slightly in post-processing and I get nice crisp prints (the operative word being "slightly"), without getting the oversharpened look. In my photos where there has been text on an object, if I can read the text clearly, then the camera has done it's job. As to the colour, I like the more neutral look of the 717.

If you want to hand hold and have giid DOF you can use flash, If your subjest is withing 10 feet you could go to F5.6 to F8 using your flash and have good DOF.

The price you pay for more powerful lenses is loss of light on any camea/lens.
