below are 4 pictures taken with D7200 SS 1/160 f8 and iso @ 800

#1 IS CAMERA NO FLASH

#2 is with pop up flash

#3 is with SB 800 and Better Beamer in 90 degree position

#4 is same as #3 with BB being held up slightly

My question is why does the dark band occur with the BB attached to the SB 800 but not without it

probably because you are focusing the light into a smaller area. The area where the light is not hitting (anymore) is going to be dark again.

I seems this is being tested with a wide-ish lens, which is purpose defeating, I would think. Try with a longer lens and see if the problem persists.

I get the same results when using 150-600 at 40 feet.

A 70mm lens on a crop-frame Nikon is not a wide angle.

The Better Beamer narrows the coverage of the flash, and you've managed to point it so poorly angled light does not hit the bottom of the photograph.

Let me add that at 70mm all you need is to zoom the flash head. The Better Beamer is for use when your focal length exceeds the zoom built-into the flash head.

For a BB, 70mm crop is too wide. This is easy to test; shoot at a wall. Inside is best.

The BB pattern will be smaller than the image frame. Try a longer focal length, and then use this test to also align the BB on the flash; you might need to shim.
