Saw some deer out on the street, rushed to the shack to get a long lens, and when I got back . . . you know the rest. :-(

So I shot this emaciated critter in low res mode instead:

Lens was the recently acquired used 70-300mm DG OS. Not bad for the price ;-)

I used RT's WP11 overcast profile which slightly offset my under-exposed shot. After a lot of adjustment, I ended up with the above. So, it can be done in RawTherapee but it's hard work, compared with SPP.

If it hadn't been fer thet bob' wahr I would have claimed the 3D look . . .

superb shot, as usual, but I wonder if the owner is abusing the animal!

The name is Barb Whyre... she owns the farm :-)

An 8 wire fence! Wow! That bull must be mean. Maybe they're starving him to stop him from having so much energy . . . but doesn't he just eat grass? There's grass EVERYWHERE. Maybe he's got worms or something.

Anyway, I'd love to see the full-size version, because that photo looks pretty detailed Ted.

All it takes is a severe itch. ;-)

I have the 70-300mm lens. It is good 70-200mm and good for macro work but as others have commented beyond 200mm things fall off badly. I have seen the same remark made about the famous Sigmonster, the 300-800mm. After 700mm it softens. It is useful to have that slightly longer range but why not make a good macro 70-200mm etc? In use I always have to check how zoomed I am, I found it is better to stop at 200mm and crop. I don't suppose those diligent folk at Lens Rental bother with low-priced zooms but they might have data on the Sigmonster...

Thanks, Scott.

Full size was LO res, 2336px wide posted as 1920px, so not much of a reduction in detail. Here instead is a comparison of 100% crops between SPP conversion and RawTherapee conversion. You'll be able to see easily which workflow gives better acutance.

Yes, here's the same shot opened as a raw composite out of RawDigger, meaning no processing at all and no conversion to RGB space, which in turn means that below we see what the lens+sensor saw:

100% Crop - please view full size
100% Crop - please view full size

Range was about 20 yards, OS on, hand-held, best of three shots. Compared to the images posted earlier, this is how it looks with no sharpening at all. On the bright side, it seems that the lens at 300mm can grab images capable of being made "sharp enough" in post.
