Sony A7 directly full press shutter lag 2.0

Hi,

I already asked this here but nobody answered maybe I couldn't explain well my problem but now I made a video about it in slow motion so I hope somebody can tell me something. However I guess the camera is working the way it is maybe a firmware update could help but still I don't really understand that am I the only one who would like to occasionally skip the "half press first and then full pres the shutter" thing and just full press directly when using MF lenses?

I hope somebody can tell me something or even better Sony could notice my issue. I'm too naive I know, they cannot even hear people asking the ability to control minimal shutter speed for auto iso... so what could I hope...

Thanx anyway,

András

Well, you can, right?

no, sadly you need to buy an A6300 or A7RII for that feature.
Thanx anyway,

András

Not sure if it would reduce any delay you feel you are encountering but you could turn off AF from the shutter button, just in case there is any check/computation being performed even when MF glass is attached. Maybe worth trying. Can't say I've experienced any lag in shots when using back button focusing and only shutter release on the shutter button.

If you use EFCS, you will see the mechanical shutter engage at the end of the exposure. It's hard to tell anything from your video since you never mention your settings (EFCS, shutter).

As others said there's no delay, you're forgetting that what you see is shutter closure, which of course happens AFTER your set exposure time. Set your shutter to 1 s, mysteriously your "delay" will now be 1 second.

You just got your sensor dirty for no good reason.

Yes, I know I was so disappointed when I realized they also just want my money even for a so basic feature such this.
I didn't get what your issue was but you have to realize this: you shoot with EFCS (electronic first curtain shutter) on. That means that as soon as you press the shutter button the sensor starts recording and ends the exposure with the mechanical shutter curtain. So it looks like being delayed, but it's just that the sound of the mechanical shutter occurs after exposure, hence the delay.
Yes , I know. I tried this also with EFCS off. But the point is not that. I try to explain. The video has two parts. The first part is normal speed, the second is slow motion, unfortunately there is no sign between the two I will fix it. So in each part I perform 4 half press full press shot (cannot see lag) and 4 directly (immediate) full press shot (there is lag). So this is my problem what I tried to show when I take the directly full press shot I can feel some lag and as you can see in the second part (in slow motion) there is this lag.

I hope I could make myself clear.

First of all thank you for your reply.

Yes I tried of course turning AF off, turning e first curtain off, even in full manual mode turn auto ISO off cause I thought tha camera can still compute something.

Thanks again.

My settings is M mode, manual ISO EFCS on.

I quote my first reply maybe I will also add this to the video description.

Also try turning off SteadyShot. When you press or half-press the shutter button, IBIS kicks in if activated (even when AF w/ Shutter is disabled), and this may cause your delay.

Thank you for all your replies!

Please visit the video again I made some comments and I hope it makes my issue clear.

Thanks

Thanks,

I'm confused AFAIK the A7 (the first one) doesn't have any stabilization option. Did I miss something?

i tried the same with my A7 but I couldn't perceive any difference between half+half vs full shutter press.

However, it seems that the measurements confirm your feeling: full press with MF takes approximately 0.11 seconds more compared to half press "pre-focused: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-a7/sony-a7A6.HTM

You are probably right, I thought it is basic, because my Ricoh GR has it, and on other forums angry users said the Nikon D600 also has it which is the cheapest FF Nikon so I thought it is basic feature for a FF camera but anyway doesn't matter I just don't like when we have to pay for some "little" thing in the software side. I would pay for better sensor, AF performance improvements or things which are connected to development and hardware but for lossless raw or this shutter speed thing, I don't know it feels weird to me, however I'm very happy with the A7 and the Sony lenses so I just let it go...

Thanks, yes it is good it can prove what I felt. So I can only let this go also I guess.

Thanks your concern

I do agree that this function should have been included from the beginning or at least added via firmware updates since it's just software.

If I recall correctly, David Kilpatrick on Photoclubalpha.com said that when you decouple AF from shutter press, the lag is reduced. Although this was with the A7RII it may be useful to try with your camera. You can set "AF with shutter" off and select one of the other buttons to AF.

If you want to take the "risk" search for OpenMemories there is a very basic unoffical app which works...
For me half of the price difference between the A7II and A7RII is for software features that have been disabled on purpose to differenciate those two cameras even more. It's not like sony is the only company who does this but somehow it's the company where this behavious is bothering me the most.

Haven't read the whole thread but you could decouple the AF from the shutter release BBF style.

2nd tab 3rd menu AFw/shutter on off>>>off

2nd tab 6th menu CUSTOM KEY SETTINGS AEL button AF>>> ON for BBF.

Hope this helps.
