I have been looking at the 5400 vs 5700, but I must say after reading about non-functional flashes, dead and hot pixels, and gearing problems in the zoom lens, it doesn't seem like a very good idea.

I'm not sure if the camera is just a dog, or its been selling in high enough volume for long enough that some level of problems are inevitable.

Maybe the 5400, being newer, will have fewer problems??

I've had mine for ten months and not one problem...no pixel problems...haven't even updated to the newer software because I've been quite happy with it the way it is.

you have to understand these kind of message boards are a place for people to sound off about problems they have with their*stuff* for every person that has a problem you read about theres 1,000's that are warm & fuzzy about the 5700...like me
 
You got dat right. After a few glitches and gotchas, I worked out the kinks in my 5700 and now I'm happy I got it. I needed a camera that could take flash photos at 10-15 meters, and with my SB DX-50, I got it. Take a look at the bathing beauties at http://photos.yahoo.com/gnash799 and see what I mean.

I just checked it for hot pixels. Mind you I have not seen anything in photos was just wondering how the software worked. None not a single problem pixel. I have had not problems do to the camera, a few user error issues is all the problems i have had. I would buy it again.

I have had two problems with my first 5700 (zoom gear & CCD out of sync?). They replace it for a new one. And if this new one would had a problem, still I shall try another 5700.

If you like/love PHOTOGRAPHY It´s a piece of machine !! It has macro capability, zoom x8 (30mm-280mm equivalent, almots) manual settings, stunning good quality pictures; all in one machine, you don´t need to carry extra lenses, big bag with all kind of accesories. The learning courve it´s not straightaway, but also photography it is not. Really I love it more each time. And you will enjoy a lot, too.

I did more research. I started hanging out here and asking lots of questions like you are. I even started a poll entitled "vote on 5700 problems"--do a search for it--. My conclusion was that some people had problems, most didn't. I bought a 5700. I love mine. Absolutely love it.

Look at my photos on my photography page. I've only had this camera for 2 months.

now and then, as well built as they are, and cameras are certainly no different. IF I'd have had a problem with my 5700 I would be discussing it also, but none have materialized after a year of ownership.

--I think if you look at all sites you will find that all brands of camera's have their issues I don't think the 5700 has any more issues as the others.

I guess I would be worried if all that showed up in the same camera--or all cameras, but my 5700 has none of it. So far, no woofing has been heard from it.

As for the 5400, that's a much wider, less zoomy camera. Takes yer pick.

I have been using the 5700 since mid-July 2002 (yes over a year) and have not had one problem. I love this camera, but like all digital cameras, improvements can and should be made.

Yes, the volume is high, the 5700 has been selling very good.

Yes, the the 5700 has been selling for over a year, the 5400 just a few months. There are of course many more 5700's in circulation.
