Pentax *ist D price announced

All this is just speculations. According to Pentax japenese homepage, Pentax has not set the price yet. They will tell the price when the camera ships. They will have a big *ist D exhibition late august, and it's expected that Pentax will tell the price after this.

But please note that the prices guessings that's been floating around recently, usually includes the FA-J 18-35 lens.

Best wishes
Roland
Hi,

FYI: the price in Canada for the body only is going to be $2599
CAN according to the info from http://www.digitalreview.ca

I am a D100 shooter, however, I think the Pentax *ist D is an
interesting camera. I expected it though to be a bit more
competitively priced however, compared to the Canon 10D and the
Nikon D100...

Rgds,

Bill

Yepp ... and there is one more problem: this is the first
Pentax DSLR. So, obviously Pentax (and even more important,
the actual shops) will have no clue where the price should be.
Therefore, we might see a rather big change in price rhe nearest
months. And (of course) the sparse supply the first months will
help keeping the price high.

I am glad that I plan to buy a DSLR spring 2204 :)

Things will have happened then - both istD, E1 and
probably new cameras from Olympus, Pentax, Canon
and Nikon. Maybe even Sigma. Sounds like a good
timing for buying a DSLR system. Interesting times
ahead!

According to Michael's statement (Luminous Landscape), this information is official from Pentax. Now, whether it really will be the final street price remains to be seen. Also, according to Pentax, no lens is included at that price.

While the market will eventually dictate the price, it doesn't seem this is speculation. Reichmann is not prone to state non-factual information.

Roland, what is your longevity secret, and will you pass it along
to the rest of us? :-)
Opps - typo :)

But it would be nice - would it not?

I mean being able to plan for 2204.

I will still wait for the reviews and then compare the whole lense range to Canon and Nikon.
I am used to work with the D30 and the EF28-70 2.8 L USM most of the time.
Which Pentax lense does compare to this canon lens?
I am in the market for a camera now, have no lenses so far...
that sayed I won't base my decission on the fact that one body is
+ - 300€ compared to the others.

How are Pentax lenses priced compared to Canon glass?
....just 50 euros, I'd definitely go for the Fujifilm S2.

Even though I have a number of excellent Pentax lenses.

If the price doesn't come down, I mean at least by 40%, Pentax has
a surefire LOSER.......

......once again (hate to say it, but it's true)

Pentax makes an equivalent lens, 28-70 2.8, but its expensive. Another, more affordable alternative is the 24-90 3.5-4.5, which is a very good lens for the price (around $400).

Hope this helps.

If this is true, it puts it above the 10D. Canon probably has lower costs due to not having to buy the CMOS from anyone. Pentax has to put up with having to give up margin to Sony, maybe they should have looked at the Foveon, I'm sure they would have loved to get a second outlet for their technology. And having one of the big names would have legitimized it even further. Only problem would have been the lack of high ISO.

There is probably sufficient pent-up demand to support this price initially, but not for long. It might be worth waiting for the market to settle down a few months, if you can stand it.
Over at Michael Riechmann's site, he's listing official USA street
prices for the camera at $1,699 and the 18-35 lens at $1,899.

The point about buying a Nikon/Canon/Fuji/Kodak camera always was that people had the Nikon or Canon lenses.

There are a lot of people out there that have Pentax lenses. Maybe the camera will sell on its own to this people and to people new to (D)SLR due to it's built size for example.

If the picture/menue/handling quality whatever does live up to the expections and is compareable to the D100/10D/S2 then why wouldn't you pay just as much for a lighter smaller camera?

Like I said before. If you have to buy a complete range of lenses you wouldn't mind spending + - 200€ for the body. You have to look at the system at a whole.

That said we should wait for the "real official msrp" and the real street price befor debating the win or lose of byers over the price.

Waiting a few month to settle down 100-200€ doesn't seem to tempting to me.

Are you serious?

The price is driven by suppy and demand. Pentax starts at a production rate of just 5k units/month and then it goes up to 10k/month. If they have estimated that the camera will sell-out at $1700, why not sell it at that price? If supply increases or demand falls, the price will be adjusted accordingly.

It's more like waiting 4 month for 100€ and I wouldn't want to do this.
http://www.geizhals.at/?phist=48330

this is the graphic for the lowest street prices/month for the 10D here in Austria.
down 150€ in the last 5 month...
having the camera 5 month longer for only 150€ is ok with me.

I doubt that the price of the Pentax will tumbel down faster than other camers.
But I understand and respect your opinion
http://www.geizhals.at/?phist=48386
the SD9 went down 700€ in the last 5 month...

What you think will happen to the already rather lown price of 1699$ with the Pentax?
Waiting a few month to settle down 100-200€ doesn't seem to
tempting to me.
You would'nt wait 3 months to save $300? I don't have money to
burn, so I'll wait.

Its hard to say really. You may be right, it might only be down $100 in 5 months. Its up to the market. It would be a shame not to be out there taking pictures for 5 months for a measly $100 wouldn't it? I myself dont know until I see the real street price. I hope its better than $1699.

At that low rate of production, it is likely that they will get that price for it. If they had flooded the market, it would have been quickly driven down by oversupply.

This way the few users that get them will generate a lot of "buzz" and this will keep the demand high.

I sure hope that it doesn't have any AF issues like the 10D. I don't think so though, I've never had any focus problems with my AF bodies from Pentax.

I too was hoping for the first DSLR around 1000-1200€
If 1700$ ist the MSRP it may be as low as 1300 on the street.
Time will tell.

Exciting anyways

I can remember waiting for the 10D prices and other before...kind of a pervert pasttime ;)

True. But the new lens is not compatible with the film camera - they are smaller, supposedly to keep the cost down. Some old lens are not 100% compatible with the new camera. The second hand market for Pentax is also small compared with Canon and Nikon. At that price (US$1699), why should I buy Pentax? (though I have 5 lenses).
Hope this helps.

Trust not your eyes, for they produce only illusions.

I think Pentax has a winner here if they choose for a very aggressive price-marketing strategy.
Let's say 1100 - 1200 EURO

IMO they have to, because 10D prices are falling quick in Europe!!!
(now 1499, last week 1740 EURO....wowwww!!)
